From my experience..when they pop out its normally game over..not to say that a good clean up n packed out with cv grease might have worked for some...

the inners pull out easily there is nothing to stop them and in this case the op had just replaced a lower arm so possibly pulled the hub out a little too far causing a bearing to fall off

this is only gonna take you an hour or so to fix undo drive shaft nut drop bottom ball joint remove drive shaft and cv boot and put the bearing back on, if you are really lucky all the rollers will still be in place held in with the grease

just looked through list of advisories, also has play in steering rack inner joint. Not doing that, will look at the cv joint if its dry. Still going to look at other cars though. Ha e a few bits and bobs ive been meaning to sell, guitar, amps, maybe a few other things, should fetch a few hundred quid, maybe enough to replace my van. Her indoors likes the megane (probably because she is always sat in front of the fire while I'm **** wet lying under it in the rain) so she can have that and I will go back to using a van. Makes sense thinking about it. I would like a new car, but a van is kinda a requirement what with lugging cement mixer and power tools around all over the place.

On a side note about warranties.

NO aftermarket warranty is worth the paper your print it out on. On a second hand car, over 5 years old, they consider everything to be wear and tear. Warranty Direct are the worst for it, and that was apparently set up to stop this kind of thing happening.

Other than that, whats this van you speak of? Surely that would have been first priority while you had the Megane on the road?

Everything can be fixed, all you need is a hammer, a roll of gaffa tape, a litre of petrol and a box of matches.

there is another thread on here about it. Engine is a write off, cost more to repair than to replace, but didn't have time.to replace so.sold the van with the intention of buying another, but that never happened, other things got in the way

You sound like my son-in-law: had he just done the decent thing and got into debt two or three years ago he and my daughter could have had twice their weekends together instead of him repeatedly fixing the old wrecks he buys.
Latest is a Volvo (S80?) that has had clutch, driveshaft, rear axle, electrical... you name it... latest thing was a dead injector. Supposedly you undo a pair of bolts, take the fuel line off and pull the injector out. Yeah right. With the top wrenched off the injector I turned up an adapter on the lathe to allow my slide hammer to screw in to a thread that's hidden in the body. The slide hammer pulled the thread out but the injector didn't move. I ended up welding up a 2x2 box frame to act as a fulcrum for a foot of M12 studding threaded into the injector body (had to drill and tap it). It bent the frame and one engine mounting but we got the injector out.
A week later two more injectors died (no idea what fuel he was using!), this time I used my 2-tonne engine crane and a length of seatbelt to pull the bu99ers out: on the second one it went with such a bang that the crane jumped 6" and put a dent in the bonnet!
It's daft: he earns three times what I do!

We live in a village where 90% of the inhabitants are over the age of 70 and when we had little money I used to find out on the grapevine who was PX in their old, lovingly maintained car for a brand spanking new one and offer a little over the PX price.
Best car we had this way was a Honda Accord, auto, every conceivable extra with 40,000 miles for £400, dealer had offered £350 as they said there was no call for cars with a boot.
The Honda was a beauty, first car I had that I looked forward to long journeys in. We put tens of thousands of miles on that car and only got rid of it when my missus changed her job and started riding a scooter into town as it was quicker, cheaper and free to park.
If you can find a retired person who is buying a new car its a brilliant way of getting a cheap decent car.

It isn't just elderly people who get low PX prices so worth asking anyone who is considering a new car how much they are getting if you are interested in their motor. We wanted a diesel Skoda Fabia and knew we'd have to pay around £5000. Found a woman who was PX her car for a new Skoda and dealer had offered £2995 despite her pointing out exactly the car cars with higher mileage were on dealer forecourt for £4600. In the end she was delighted to accept £3000 off us and stuck two fingers up to dealer. I went with her to pay (cash - full amount in one lump) for the new car and dealer wasn't very happy about loosing the PX as they wanted to make a profit on that as well as the sale of the new car.
I did similar thing with a mate years before who had a 3 year old Volvo 340 he'd owned from new and was offered low PX against a New Audi 100. I gave him cash and got a one owner, full history 20000 mile immaculate car for around half the forecourt price.

I know it's no consolation to you but a friend of mine has had his 56 plate Renault Migraine for 4 years and not had a single problem with it, I suppose it's just luck of the draw and all that. Our car is a Citroen Berlingo and it's only had a battery and a front spring in 3 years apart from basic maintenance so not doing bad. Any second hand car is a gamble if you don't have the service history and some unscrupulous traders/sellers will falsify that anyway. I wlways tend to fix what I've got till I get fed up of it which is the point you have now arrived at but don't rush into anything and have a good look round before you commit to another car.

A bit off topic ,I just popped in to the village for a few things from the shop tea and fruit ... and I parked next to a spit new smart looking 4x4 estate car never seen one like it before . I liked it. had a nose about ,went around the back saw the badge it was a Skoda Yeti ... any good ? jeff..

The missus hankers after a Skoda Yeti but they are still too new so prices are holding well, plus a lot of them are only 2wd.
The Paramedics round here use the 4wd version and seem very happy with them when I have asked.

well their website claims I am clear for 3k finance, wont have deposit til next Thursday but this reference is open for 30 days so with a bit of luck, roughly this time next week I will be driving away in a new faultless car and the megane will be on ebay
