Let me get the excuses out of the way.
I’m not a welder. I make/repair metal stuff that sometimes needs sticking together, so I weld it. My learning process is essentially self taught. So my results are often rubbish, and more often need improvement. I wear contact lenses rather than varifocal specs to avoid the virtually constant process of cleaning smears off the lenses.
But there has been a turnaround in my ability and it is solely due to the new welding helmet I bought. It’s expensive (Optrel Panoramaxx) but means I can see what I’m welding rather than having to guess. The helmet has a fantastic field of view and it means I can wear an old pair of reading glasses underneath it (this was a suggestion from my optician). So my enthusiasm for welding and improving has returned. Previously I believed I had plateaued and achieved the best results I could hope for. Not so.
