The 50mmx50mm angle iron I've bought from local stockist has a problem,well just a small problem.

I asked for the 4mtre length to be cut in 4x1000mm lengths leaving a 6ftodd piece.

After a tedious wirewheel cleaning of em I ran me straight edge down the length of em and at the edges where they have been cut(about an 1" in?) they're not square but are square down the length until I get to the edges by the cuts(annoying tha)

Where the edge is that has not been cut on the 6ft odd length its square,so I don't know how the fekker who cut em managed to do this but I need em square all the way from one end to the other.

suggestions to get em square.? hammer job do ya think?

Were they sheared? Depending on what they will be used for a hammer may be your best option.

I dunno about what they was cut on? but the edges were slightly burred so I'm imagining it was a saw?

Clamp the ends in a bench vice and crank down on the handle, should straighten reasonably well.

Distorting the ends off square is usually the result of cutting with an ironworker, a machine nearly all major steel suppliers own.

The method MattH suggests is the normal way unless it's heavy gauge, then it's big hammer time if you don't have a press of any sorts.

My apologies I dunno where I got the 4mtrs from summat in me head? its six mtrs as thats what they only sell it in.

thats all very well matt but I don't posses a large vice,I'll just have to try the hammer job but I'll need some steel under it.

its 3mm and does not have a fine/sharp inner corner

Never get steel cut to dead sizes unless you totally know the quality of thier work

50x 3 rsa is pretty much guaranteed to be mangled on the edges and bent along its length also. It bends and buckles if you give it a long hard stare. Let alone give it to a stockholder to cut and a waggon driver to deliver.

Getting it true? Depends on how good it needs to be

If your getting something cut for transport etc get it slightly too long in future and make the final cuts yourself

This is the problem DanielW buying the type of steel you are it was never meant for precision.

Angle is difficult to straighten as it always wants to bend in the wrong direction. Hitting it with a hammer won't get you far other than bending the legs. The rolling/straightness tolerance for black steel is huge - even for small section.
'Mill ends' are usually sheared off when the section comes out of the mill so is glowing orange when its cut - usually means the ends are squashed out of shape. That's why sections are slightly over length i.e 6.1m, 12.2m etc, to give you 6m/12m when the ends are trimmed.
Most stockholders work to +/- 3mm when cutting to length, in reality usually closer, especially when CNC saws are used. For a one off bit of angle, its probably cut on a bandsaw by hand so only as good as the bloke with his tape.

Never buy steel cut to length from stockholders. Even structural beams/columns. Learnt that one the hard way.

Pete is on the right path, whacked it in an HA400 or something similar whacked in 1 meter ont the keypad and the hydraulic feed jaws have clamped right down on it

Seems a logical explanation,can't really say how he secured the angle because it was pretty much out of sight.
