I have one the same, its over 25 years old, the trick is just flick the switch on then off, otherwise yes its a wrist breaker, safer still find a pillar to mount it in, although I have had no luck on that in all the time ive had mine! still use mine, just take extra care as it breaks through whatever you are drilling as thats when its like wrestling with a croc ....you know if you weaken you are in serious trouble !!arther

I was told by the workshop wrinkly years ago that Wolf brought out the gutbuster range of drills a couple of months after they bought out a medical plaster of paris supplier.

Reminds me off the time I was using a post hole borer that caught a root I let go quick to see my mate spin round then flung across the clients garden in to adjastent flower bed

My dad had a new one of those when I was at school. I had used it on occasion, and got the bruises to show for it. The trick to using one is not to drill too big a pilot so the finish size doesn't drag the bit in. Another thing that would help is to stone a tiny flat land on the drill cutting edges to dull them a bit. They'll still work but are much less likely to drag in the drill when it breaks through.

so that Wolf thing.. we had one of those on a frame that clamped to the rails, then a pram handle allowed you to pull down and bore holes in the rail for traction and signalling bonds, in those days we had to walk and carry stuff including a genny miles to the job so being young and strong <note 1> I used to just take the drill and wind it through holding the two short tubes that would normally mount the thing to the frame - I know I couldn’t manage that today! The linesman I was working to only had one lung so I had to carry everything ......

<note 1> remember those days when eating more just made you stronger not fatter :0)

I was repairing the roof of one of my storage containers one day, and watching a particularly stupid numpty using a gutbuster drill on some steelwork outside a workshop other side of the yard. Numpty had been warned to be very careful with the drill, but needless to say he ignored the warning. Result was the drill jammed, slamming one of the handles into his arm, and at the same time the steel being drilled flicked round and cut the lead, giving him a nasty shock. Have to admit to laughing so much that I almost fell off the container roof!

I too was using a post hole borer along with a rough ignorant guy. He insisted on forcing the borer into the ground using all his weight so every time it caught a stone or root it jammed instead of jumping out of the hole. After a few painful twists of my back I got fed up so next time it jammed I let go and stepped back and watched the other guy get spun around a few times (he hadn't the wit to let go of the handles or the throttle!). It was a while before the next hole was drilled - he was licking his wounds and I was too busy pi55ing myself laughing!

Shortly after starting work as a 15 year old 8 stone 5'4" tall apprentice in 1970 I went on a job with a "experienced" fitter to install a room sealed gas heater, we had to core a 5" hole through a wall on the stairwell for the flue. After drilling for a while with this humungous drill with a 30" bar sticking out from the side of it the bit grabbed and spun me around seeing this happen he (being over 6' tall and probably about 14 stone) jokingly came over, pushed me out of the way and pulled the trigger only to be thrown across the room also .
The following day he was all for sending me up a ladder with the same drill .
All the newer drills we got later have a clutch fitted which was a pain in the neck in damp brick though.

You will certainly get a good work out using that drill for any length of time. I have one and it weighs a tonne. I don't use it very much but it is super handy when I need it.

Used one of those as an apprentice truck mechanic in the 70's to drill out stretched spring hanger rivets on Ford concrete mixers, had to reach between the rear axles to get at them and pray it didn't catch, which it always did.

We had one of those in Mikes boatyard, everybody dreaded the thing. I still have another old Wolf metal cased thing, last used to drill 7/8" holes 4" deep in an iron ballast keel, It only does 375rpm & dont stop easy.

Yep, got some of those too, clever chuck. Tighten by hand then nip up with an Allen key for super tightness.

This one has a similar vibe I think. I liken it to a 1930's Flash Gordon Space Rocket. Well, it looks a bit like it to me!
