Thanks @Richard. The nice man has sent me the drawing in PDF format, but apart from d/loading and saving it I've not had a chance to examine it - just too much on elsewhere today.

As I said above, I'm going to clear space, mark everything and take pics as I go - never ventured inside a chuck before, even a 'basic' one, so it's "to infinity and beyond".....

Oil. Yes it flings so keep it light and frequent. That’s what I do.

Just to put this thread to bed, I discovered the local bike shop sells Weldtite TR2 grease in a 150ml tube, so with a little dry graphite grease mixed in [just because I had it on the shelf ] the chuck is fully assembled and is now as smooth as a smooth thing turning smoothly. Happy chap, me!!

Still have to set the Tru-Grip side of things up to maximise accuracy and minimise any run-out, but as I have an appointment tomorrow it'll have to wait a few days. I've decided to do the 4-jaw while I'm at it but this will be much easier[and quicker ] to do.

Final, final report. Got the 4-jaw all apart, cleaned [wasn't at all bad], oiled and reassembled.

Fitted the 3-jaw and, using one of a box of gauges I bought on the 'Bay as a work-piece, got it set up and measured run-out at 0.001" with the DTI, which is more than accurate enough for my needs. I'll turn another few bits another day and recheck, but seem fine and is a pleasure to use now.

You will probably find that you will have a different amount of runout on different diameters due to wear in scroll, and I suppose initial inaccuracies in manufacture. So you will likely have to true it each time you do a different diameter, if it is needed to run true then I found it is easier just to whack on the 4 jaw. I never use the GripTru now.
