Scrapped a 2m offcut of 254 X 254 X 73 UC the other day.
Current job we are erecting needed 3 new 500mm stubs making, due to customers surveying error............... guess what size !!

How much do they cost?

Scrap price for steel is only going to go up but this isn't actually an offcut. It is clearly a component part and all I have to do is nail the exact make/model/manufacturer. It's not the same dimensions as the universal column mentioned above. I think it's an "extreme loading lintel" complete with the sheet of 12mm steel plate they should come with.

It’s 203x203x86UC - It won’t measure exactly that - the bigger the size, the further away they become from the serial size.

Managed to buy a 4m offcut , which was £190 (+ VAT). New brackets made , and a 2.5m offcut left ( hanging on to it until the jobs finished this time)

Scrap rate is half what it was a few years ago, barely worth hauling to the yard. Will most likely double over the next few years, might even spike post Brexit.

73kg per metre.
Just told the fabricator to chuck it in their scrap bin. Like you say , not worth putting too much effort in

I remember in the past, at Christmas , they used to weigh the skip in and share it out between the lads.
They used to keep back all the heavy stuff, and hide it under tarpaulins during the year especially. Skip truck used to strain under the weight

Was the bandsaw blade in there after cutting it

305*305*240 UC - There's quite a few bits of it in there - I think the blade has been there a while, the varipitch blades are brilliant, they will happily cut stuff like that, down to small box section.
A £65 blade probably got ruined cutting a piece of 16mm round bar at light speed

id have a birthday in that skip plenty of scrap for me to play with

Breaks my heart to see such useable material going in the bin but of course, whatever profit there may be in it, would be diluted several times over depending how many people are involved from one end of the company to the other.

The other issue is of course, a productive company is going to generate this relatively tiny amount of waste by getting through a gigantic amount of material. If they were to spend time sorting it or storing it, the sheer logistics of managing the constant flow of offcuts would be horrendously inefficient and expensive...

For one guy working out of his own shed, that's a goldmine. So forgive me for being pleased with myself for amassing several tons of rebar, and steels or hoarding a massive pile of used 4x2s. I do enjoy rubbing shoulders with the professionals on here; the welders and fabricators. I learn something new every time I visit. Every time seriously.

But I'm just one man and his shed trying to scratch a living and have a bit of fun, do a bit of restoration work and recycle everything within arms reach. Save the planet one pile of scrap at a time. I'm not sure if this is a rant, I guess I have seen too many "I lob stuff like that in a skip" comments on my posts recently. If it is a rant, it's over. Thanks for watching...

we have fits and spurts of scrapping and hoarding at work.

we've just had a clearout and filled a big skip with bits of beam and sheet, its all "good stuff" but generaly offcuts are created at a much greater rate than they are used.
comes a point where whatevers behing the gillotine just has to and any beam under a meter. problem with offcuts is they are usally 50mm to short for anything but bodgeing stuff for farmers dose help us get through anything down to about the 1 meter mark.

if anyone needs offcuts to play with i can probaly sort them out
