I beam project

Actually, it's not a project yet. I have no idea what to do with it...

But I've got it, it's mine and before I haul it off the trailer, I should at least have a think where I might put it.

Must weigh a good 150 - 175 kg, needed to use a couple of large Poles to move it.

There's also a "matching" plate which I believe is typically welded between the webs before you plonk a house on it. This was allegedly an "offcut" from a beam used in a basement conversion according to the builder but looks like a factory fresh unused piece to me.

So, welding table? Vice stand? Cantilever for some weird garden structure? Basis for a hydraulic press?

What to do...

If it had been a bit longer would have made a good lifting beam for the garage. I have similar in my garage with a slider I fabricated from old ball bearings & some angle.

Phone up a steel stockholder and ask them what their price per foot is for a similarly short length. The "new" value might help you make a decision on what you do with it.

You could chop it in half and then split it in half along the web to give you 4x lengths which could then be cobbled together to make a heavy, slotted welding table.

Its a lump of 203 x 203 x 86 universal column, and weighs 189.2 kg (86 kg per metre)

Nice work but a 2.2m gantry would be a bit mean, even if it was rated to a hundred odd tons.

I do have a spare I beam (or two) one of which is probably 5m+ but you've seen my workshop. Even I would be banging my head on it!

I am leaning towards something hydraulic like a press/log splitter or frankly, given the condition and price of a new one, just lob it on the 'bay.

Scrap price for steel is only going to go up but this isn't actually an offcut. It is clearly a component part and all I have to do is nail the exact make/model/manufacturer. It's not the same dimensions as the universal column mentioned above. I think it's an "extreme loading lintel" complete with the sheet of 12mm steel plate they should come with.

Scrapped a 2m offcut of 254 X 254 X 73 UC the other day.
Current job we are erecting needed 3 new 500mm stubs making, due to customers surveying error............... guess what size !!
