+1 for a MOV or possibly a self resetting fuse. Do the motor windings look ok.

Don't know about self resetting because there is a big burnt out hole in it.....

yes he did the motor requires ac not dc, he bought it thinking he could use it in a camper van

UK and US power frequency is different, so US 110v equipment with motors plugged into a UK transformer, will probably run slower as we are 50hz and US is 60hz. Maybe easier to have bought a 240v unit intended for UK?

After much faffing about, it works!!!!

Maplins didn't have a wire fuse as they call it but i got an inline fuse holder and some 5A fast blow fuses. There is enough space in the body to accommodate the fuse holder so i didn't have to modify it at all. Had it running with no load for about 5 minutes and it seems happy enough, no suspicious hitches in the motor sound nor any suspicious warm spots in the body or motor housing. I will be attacking all my drill bits tomorrow after i have ground out any damage on the bench grinder.

Very happy bunny atm and thanks to everyone who pitched in with help and advice!!

Just sharpened half a dozen of my bigger drill bits, took me a while to work out how to set the bit for 135 degree, once i had though i blasted through em. Its not as fast as i thought it would be but does a really good job.

Just to clarify an earlier comment, the UK 220v AC is between live and neutral (or phase - neutral). As I understand it, in the US most small appliances and domestic sockets are also phase (they call it "hot" over there) - neutral and that is 110v AC, however for heavier loads (e.g. washing machine, tumble dryer or cooker) they go hot - hot to give them 220v AC.
