I.2 mm mild steel sheets fabrication

Advice please if you would be so kind.. I'm needing to make a chute like a funnel but with four straight sides.. Eh a square funnel.. I've a small sheet bender, approx 1 ft long.. Would you advise trying to bend the sheet as one eh four bends or would you make each side and tig them together..

Any advice would be appreciated but I only have a small workshop so no real specialists tools ideal for this work, I just have lots of patience... Many thanks

You can do it in one piece, with some planning. You know how to do the layout?

Begin with paper and pencil. Lay it out and start folding. You'll soon see in what order to bend and that you will need to do the final closing with the sheet clamped between flat and angle bars using a mallet. ( Dont google magna-bend until ready )

wow that is awesome ... I did make a small scale card template up but it's nothing on that.. I will do another tomorrow... Can't wait.. X

No mate what is develop it out.. I appreciate the help.. Trust me I'm rarely defeated and luv learning it's just I don't have things like a suffolk wheel etc.. I made my own bender which although small works a treat..

So it's 4 equal triangles or if you wish to make a rectangular one two triangles I guess are just bigger.. What is magma bending?

Thats what I did on the paper and called lay out.

Yup, equal triangles. You could cut them out individually and then tape them to the sheet to transfer the pattern.

A magna-bend is an awesome machine for folding things like this.

Initially an Austraulian invention but now copied.
When the patents expired and the copy cats started their work the inventor made the drawings public.

Squares to round!!!!!! That's how we learnt in college.

Gosh we were all terrified of square to rounds but to be honest once you have the development sorted it's not rocket science

as im familiar with this method you can do this method with thin metal if your not wanting it welded

Most thin duct is folded together but on a square funnel 1.2 mm when you have mig or tig electric welders at hand just crack on and weld it
A lot of sweetmetal was developed this way or tinned before mig and Tig was available
With the right gear on a thin ducting job it's still the right route to take IF your set up for it!
Most shops are not today and ducting contracts goes to those who specialise in it
