Grandson #1 is about to take his driving test and is on the lookout for a first car: I've suggested the likes of Hyundai and Kia over Ford, Peugeot and VW as they're all top choices and thus high insurance. My suggestion is that he swallow his pride for a year or two and get an ex-grannymobile that won't need much doing and let him rack up some NCD while he saves for something well-blingin', innit

EDIT: well I thought I'd found the ultimate grannymobile: an '06 1.5L Nissan Almera. Literally one old biddy owner from new, FSH etc, £1500.
Told the daughter, she went off to look for insurance... £2087, with £500 excess and needs a black box fitted
Even a 1L Fiat Panda with 130,000 miles on for under £1000 is another grand for insurance.

Hard to go past a 107 / aygo ,, ive one as a run about and its mighty ,, 20 quid tax 86 quid ins and a genuine 50+ to the gallon ,, once you accept that its not an A6 etc its a hoot ,, drives way better than you imagine and bits are for nothing should it get bent ,,, and what ever you buy one for today , is what it will sell for next year ,,, under 2k be hard to beat ,,,

I bought a Santa Fe, lad that uses it racks up over a thousand miles a week in it. Its been very good, only problem we have had with it is it needs a clutch, this has only just happened and considering the mileage I would call that wear a tear.

Got the OH a wee Korean - a Kia Rio 1.4 petrol (2011, last of the MkII) about 4-years-ago. Doesn't do big miles, but to-date its been faultless except for the silly handbrake shoes inside the rear disc.

The thousand a week is his job, he zigzags all around the country looking at work and managing my guys.

I'm happy enough driving it - I'd go as far as to say I quite like it. Sure it foes nothing special or exceptional, but it's got decent road manners and is a straightforward honest little car that just gets on with it.
Paid £3200 for a very tidy 35k mile, FSH car, that's been no trouble.
That'll do just fine.

I am in the motor trade My IX 35 is a great car it just works very well .
Would recommend to anyone .
They are very much like the early nissans no frills .
Mine has the full package sat nav climate control etc

I lived in Ards and drove to Dublin 5 nights a week to work ,,I was doing a thousand miles a week as a commute , only did it for 12 years ,,, you actually get used to it , I loved it , but I enjoy driving.... still.

I used to do 1000 miles a week commuting to the Ford Halewood plant when working on their robots, I could have stayed in a hotel but as the engineers finished at 1615 on the dot (1614, office a hive of activity, 1615 doors swinging, papers floating down to desks) I would have been in the hotel by half past so I came home every night.

Not Hyundai, but still Korean, my neighbours (ne a vet and the other a horse trainer) both have Ssang Yong Rextons and swear by them.

May not be current as these things always change but the Ssang Yong Musso was a Mercedes underneath.

Knew a horse person who had one and she swore buy it too

I quite like the snobbery...they can keep buying LR and German stuff as far as I'm concerned. When they switch to the stuff I'm buying it gets annoying as the prices go up for me.

When I see a brand new LR in London my first thought is....there goes someone who knows zero about cars...in the countryside they make sense...but still plenty of better/smarter choices new.

Last week in Ealing I saw a LR...complete with snorkel kit lol.

A friend has a Rio I sourced for her when her previous Mitsi succumbed to the tin worm underneath. She loves it - it starts when she needs it to, goes well and is pretty easy on the juice. That's not to say I'd like to have one, just a case of "horses for courses".

Told this afternoon that Mitsubishi are no longer exporting into Europe, and this includes the UK Dealerships closing.
But most are likely to move over the Subaru and most will still service the Mitsubishi as they already have the right gear for doing it. Seems it's to do with European demand slump and Mitsubishi being unable to get the electronic chips in sufficient quantities to make exporting to the UK not viable in the current climate.
But it is still viable to export to China, Australia & Malaysia etc .

It might also be to do with lots of dodgy dealings and an emissions scandal dating back to 1991, the company president resigning and shares taking a massive nose dive. Also the 4N14 engine faults worldwide.
I suspect getting involved with Renault didn't do them any favours either!

FIL in Canada ( a sassy ex military hero who did the D day landing before getting seriously injured ) said when I rocked up in a big Ford Explorer that the Fly drive people substituted instead of a smaller MPV " Jeesus Dave, I know everybody needs bloody great big SUV to drive over their lawns but you ain't driving that on mine " .
