The reason I drove it today was to fill it up for her

Was serviced last September.
Have not bothered investigating it today other than the air filter and any damaged vacuum hoses, been too busy and will wait for the code reader to come, stabbing in the dark without it

I think I would check the oil and coolant levels then take it for a little spin. Warm it up nicely then give it a darn good thrashing down the nearest motorway, third gear at 60 / 70 mph for a few miles should wake it up a bit.

My car was the same, down on power, worse mpg and a bit stuttery on tickover
New plugs, leads and coils improved it a bit, blast up the M62 and I saw I huge cloud of smoke behind me, followed by an instantaneous boost in power
Next day, engine light came on, code said "cat low efficiency" so I reset it and ignored it
Fast forward a few weeks and the exhaust snapped at the manicat, full system cost £250
but I found the manicat mostly empty and the second cat completely empty, the backbox however was full of dust and fibre

I always wait until an engine reaches operating temp before revving it and never put a car to bed cold. I redline my cars several times a day and have never blown an engine. Funnily enough though tyres don't last and my brakes are always squealing!

Egr valve stuck open is usually a sneaky one, on "older" 5yrs or so cars it rarely throws a code but gives engine a constant flow of nice hot sooty exhaust gas to try and combust. If it sticks shut though, oh my god there's he'll on, blinky lights and limp mode! You cant drive a car that doesnt meet its euro emissions the ecu will do it's best to make you aware of this!
Blanking plates work wonders for the health of your valves and inlet manifold though.
If you pm me some more info and an email address I can send you all the component test values so you can test the sensors with a multimeter.

Sorry I have not been back with any follow up until now and thanks to those offering to help and forward info etc.
I was waiting for the code reader @mrfuzzy linked to, it arrived a few days later than it should of but it did arrive so happy enough so far.
For £8 I was amazed how nice it looked and actually felt good quality, so headed out to the car, found the socket, connected up and it resulted in several faults over a time period of months.
3 x P codes
1 x U code
1 x C code
and 1 x P0000 which reads as no fault but can also be a default for fault unknown to the reader.
This made it difficult to isolate the present issue so I have erased the faults from memory, the engine management light has went off and as soon as it lights up I will do a recheck to hopefully find only one fault code, although I realise there may still be more than one but at least they will be up to date.
The P codes it gave appear to suggest it's an air flow issue, or they may have been before it's last service and new air filter, hence the need for an up to date fault to show.
I am from the time when it was easy to fault diagnose a car, if it did not work it was broke and that's that, a socket set, screwdriver, new part and fixed, none of this several hundred codes to work through.
Saying that for the price I would suggest even for the person who never lifts the bonnet these are a handy tool, taking the car to the garage suggesting sensor xyz may be faulty reduces the risk of a rip off, they may think twice if they believe you have some awareness of your cars mechanics
