Hydrovane compressor?

I have been offered a Hydrovane compressor for free, my relative said it stopped on him and he needed a compressor asap so bought a new one. I know nothing about compressors, this one is on a trolley and resembles a drum from memory. Is it worth me picking up and seeing what's wrong with it? Can parts be obtained? Or are they troublesome and not worth the hassle?

They are excellent compressors , parts are available no problem unless it's a very early one , but , if the air end has had a catastrophic failure it would more than likely cost more than it's worth to repair. Could just be the motor or something simple though !
Worth picking up for a look see.

I'd never heard of them and only took a glance at it in passing really as I thought it was probably a cheap and nasty thing. It didn't look that old and I expect it is something simple. From what I remeber now I think he said it wasn't much but couldn't be doing with it and bought another compressor (money isn't a problem there!)

Hydrovanes are far from cheap and nasty , they are one of the top makes. They are very quiet and as long as routine maintainance is performed on the dot they have a very long service life. I have a 501 which and it's superb. There's plenty of help available on this forum to help you sort it out.

Hydrovanes are rotary vane compressors and are excellent machines. Some are designed for continuous operation - some run on a tank. Much quieter than a reciprocating (piston) compressor, and easier to fix than a screw unit ! Might be worth getting it and having a play - spares are readily available.

I had one some years ago, needed some parts, it turned out that the parts were eye wateringly expensive & the gasket set should have been gold plated.
I ended up scrapping it as totally uneconomic to repair.
