hydraulic press safety

heard a couple of stories today about safety officers making workshops get rid of their hydraulic press because they're not safe
I've never seen one for sale with a safety screen or any other safety device if there is such a thing and I wonder if it also affects fly presses
if anyone has a safety guard or ideas i would be interested in a few pick

you are as far as i am aware supposed to have guards around them. universal ironworkers have guards over cutting blades etc. i dont think it would effect a flypress you would have to be rather dumb to put you fingers in there and turn the handle.

it's strange that they don't have two sell them with guards
the biggest difference between the two is probably the tool post just wondering if it would make a difference to the tool post type setup on hydraulic press

I've never seen a press with a safety guard apart from some very high tonage presses (300 ton+), I have used several 50 ton presses and had stub axle/hubs pop out under pressure, but you know if "its" on the move before it go's pop away.

Probably a case of the office based H&S bod not knowing what hes looking at or how to use it...

The current regs require you to place guards around any tool or process that has the liklehood of causing injury - so, yes, guards required!
Flypresses bit the dust in industry quite a while ago, mainly due to the heavy weight that swings around at head level.

im going to make a hydraulic press i seen scarecrows and i am inpressed i aquired a free hydraulic top link from the creamery which was sent back due to a weld failure looks like a mig with no penetration, and the eye fell off. so i was planning on using that and putting a very long set of hydraulic hoses in it and let the tractor do the work, will there be fair strengt in that ram

I would be more inclined to weld the eye back on and keep it as a top-link or sell it you could buy a jack for what it would cost in hose and fitting and the travel speed would-be way to fast for pushing in the bearings it would be just too hard to control I gave around €35 for my jack at a car boot sale

Any one that wants a 10 ton press doesnt mind spending the money.

conncet the two together and you have a 10 ton press that works on air pressure, does need a reasonable quantity of air 2hp compressor a minimum. we have had one for a good few years

Much larger hydraulic presses and stamping presses have had deadmans handles and bars/cages etc for years. Theres usually a bar or something that has to be locked in place after the workpiece has been placed inside, before the machine can operate.
This was done rightly so, because of a spate of people being found flat inside in the bad old days of mass production in the uk, and nowadays this only tends to happen when people have been silly enough to defeat the safeties, either for maintenance or deliberately to avoid downtime after a issue.

Not sure I agree with a small press in a jobshop needing quite the same level of guarding but its SEP anyway for me nowadays
What next, english wheels with soft plush wheels so you dont stub/flatten your fingers too? safe rubber bladed stanley knives, the list could be endless...

ive seen 100ton presses without guards, when would u want a guard you can usually tell when its going to go pop, and a flimsy guard isnt really going too stop it. and its your fault not the tools fault if you do get injured.

some presses dont have metal guards but light guards or lazer beam ones that if broken stop the machine they wont stop stuff from flying out though
