hydraulic power pack

Hi all

I have made a log splitter in the past. I was wanting to make a power pack to run it. Wouldn't be a ram anything like the size of jcb.

It would be like 10t or less made for 3 points links.

Any idea about engine and pump . Used to have lister with a water pump at the . Or small petrol and pump. ?

Just looking for idea

(if electric is available)

or if it's going on the 3 point link on the back of a tractor, could you not use the power take off to drive the pump?

I have seen the electric one's. They are not suitable. The 3 point links will post be a mod. It was just to give a rough guide.

I have a tractor but don't think will be down at my new house. I also just fancied making on tbh

From the bit I read about power packs it seems the modern way is a two stage pump with an output (and engine of course) to match your application rather than a simple fixed displacement pump on an old diesel. Your best bet is probably to look at the build your own power pack kits sold by Flow fit:http://stores.ebay.co.uk/harrierfluidpowerltdtaflowfit/_i.html?_fsub=2590857017 you can see what size engine / pump they have matched to a few sizes of ram.

two stage pumps can be a bit quick for log splitters you are better with a ram that has a very thick ram rod so that it is quick to return.

apparently power steering pumps range from ~500psi to ~2500psi

the top end should be way more than enough for what you want ?

added bonus is they're made for variable speed so you can gear it up/down with belts or rev the engine higher/lower to change the flow rate / ram speed

if possible, could you set the ram up with springs to pull it back once you come off he power ? that way you can let the ram return by itself while you get the next log ready, no need to worry about getting as a finger/hand jammed while it's under hydraulic power

They would have to be massive springs to push all that oil and lift the weight of a solid piston plus oil plus a splitter head.
Vauxhall astra electric 12V P/S pump, max pressure 120 bar. 1800 psi 1.5 cub cm ish per rev.

in that case, what about plumbing the 2nd hydraulic line (used to return the piston) to a small air cylinder... as the piston pushes out the air is compressed, when you come off the power the air pressure pushes the piston back ? with a schrader (spel?) valve on it you could add a blow it up to 30psi or something before you start... to make sure there's enough pressure to return the piston ?

These guys have everything you'll need at pretty sensible prices, the 2 stage pumps are ideal because they allow a smaller engine to perform the job as the oil flow is fast until the pressure builds then it slows down.

if the ram holds 20litres (total guess) and you connect it to a 20litre tank/bottle/little compressor tank/whatever

when you compress the cylinder all the way hydraulically, you double the pressure on the air side


EDIT: actually, if you have a compressor handy it could be connected straight to that, or an old spare tyre... or anything along those lines

Thanks for the ideas . Sorry if I didn't make it that clear . I just want to make a log splitter . With an engine to run a pump. I have no electric power.
So was just looking for some ideas.

There is more in it than I first thought

ah sorry when you said small cyl, I read it as the small SIDE of the cylinder ie return side, I have reread it now and understand your idea
