Hi
I would like to make an hydraulic hand pump to operate an hydraulic cylinder (like the ones on car shop press). has anybody made such a thing and if so, please let me have some guidelines, (about the pump, not the whole press).
Thanks.
it might be tricky getting a seal between the piston and the cylinder wall...
but maybe think in terms of a bicycle pump? A piston being forced up and down inside a cylinder with a small outlet and a ball bearing on the 'other' side of that outlet.
Or do a google search for an exploded diagram of a pump and copy that.
I think I'd be tempted to get the seals and build the metalwork to suit...
ah, how about a car brake master cylinder or clutch cylinder?
The pump can be sealed with a seal fixed on the cylinder, sealing around the piston so you don't need to be able to finish the inside of the cylinder. You could probably find a bit of chromed rod to use as piston. Seals shouldn't be a problem to find. While I would go with modern seals the seals used in old stuff was graphite impregnated string[well that's what it looked like].
If anyone works with hydrulics I have the stuff to make a couple of rams, 50mmID tube and 40mmOD ram and could do with seals.
I would have thought by the time you've bought the honed cylinder tube or un honed, and the hard chromed rod and made the seal flanges end cap and valves, you would be £££ out on just buying a parker hand pump off the shelf, the air over oil ones are not fortunes....
