hyd clutch slow to return , experts please

short story , replaced 3 piece clutch , slave , master , hose , bled 100 times and the pedal comes up 90% of the way normaly then takes a what feels like a second or 2 to pop up the last bit

i had a thread a few years back and this was never resolved , its a sunny day car used only sparingly , its still bothering me and makes it feel bad to drive

1991 golf g60 , 02a gearbox with hyd clutch (all factory made not some home made lash up) owned it 25 years and the clutch always felt a bit wooly and low , decided a few years back to redo it all as i had some ££ spare

new sach 3 piece clutch , slave , master , hose , pedal pings back like a rocket when not connected , bled it dozens of times , manually , pressure bleeder , slave off and tied up high with the rod compressed , tried more new slave and master just the same

any thoughts so far?

i can muster up - it never came with a clutch pedal stop for the rest position , it has im guessing 20mm free play ar the top now , would fitting a bolt to take most of that up be an idea , or see if i can find genuine branded hyd parts but im guessing not or £££££

this box /clutch was fitted to thousands of passat /corrado /golf 3 , its not rare weird thing that never worked

one thing to note , i have about 4 slaves here , all the rods vary by a few mm , doesnt seem to make any odds , guessing the hyd take up the slack anyway

Are you sure it's the hydraulic side? It could be the pedal or release arm hanging on its pivot.

pedal shoots back like a rocket with nothing attached its spring loaded

release arm ..i dunno i dont see how nothing much can fight the clutch springs

Had the same on a company Traffic.
New clucth, slave and master etc.

Turns out the PTFE Bushes in the pedal box were worn.

does mine sound like its the pedal though ? honestly it shoots up violently when disconnected

I had one that would come up instantly, apart from the last little bit, which would have a delay of a second or so.

The master eventually failed. New master didn't do it.

I know you have a new master. I'm just saying what happened to mine in the hope of, somehow, letting you diagnose yours!

Sounds like a servo problem. Blocked air filter into servo? The pushrod gaitor into servo causing it to stick? Failed internally?

I had a Triumph Dolomite Sprint with brakes on fire - the servo diaphragm had broken and jammed the push-rod - brakes went on okay, just couldn't return.

Some cars have 'em, and apparently there is a "clutch servo repair kit" for some VWs . . .

theres no servo on my clutch

put a 3ft clear pipe full of fluid on bleed nipple and back bleed right up to master with 5psi

try it with the reservoir lid off, could be it is trying to pull a vacuum when it should be drawing fresh fluid from the reservoir?

reverse bleed it ? ive done that with a syringe with no joy

yeah new reinforced arm fitted too , when they bend it makes the clutch drag so not really that imo

So can you feel the the clutch going over centre (when the pedal pressure drops as the diaphragm flips the other way ) before you hit the carpet. If it doesn't it may have beetle disease where the crank and flywheel runs away from the clutch which screws up the pedal travel.
Also is the point when the pedal stops returning is the rest just stay slack? ignoring the return spring.

cant say i feel any over center feeling , apart from my gripe about the last bit of travel it just feels neutral like any other hyd clutch - before i swapped all the new parts on it didnt do this , it felt old and tired but the pedal returned as it ough

Do these have a damper in the pipe work? most hydraulic clutches do and I believe it allows the fluid through quickly but restricts it on return

no damper too old for that...i did wonder if retro fitting one would change things but i think thats the complaint for them
