after looking for a reasonably tidy caravan to convert to a bike trailer I found hubs with all the bearings for cheap compared to a knackered caravan,

the thing that im not sure of is, how do you attach it to the rest of your frame/chassis?

With these hubs you have to make up the axel. you'd be better off finding some suspension units like these That gives you a plate to weld to. There are loads of options I.e braked hubs, full axels that you then build a frame around. It all depends how adventurous you are feeling and how much time you have to spend on the project

The last trailer i built i brought the suspension units, lights and coupling. then i built everything else from bits i had knocing around. A client brought it for £1200. Tidy profit if you tink the bits cost around £200 inc paint! Good luck and let us know how you get on!

They're hubs only, you'd still need to get some stub axles to suit.

Edit: Good link Pete, shows that type of hub mounted on a stub axle.

keep it simple - few bits of box, some angle, sticky back plastic...

Brakes are complicated, and shouldn't be necessary if you're only carrying a bike.

just keep it simple, unless you're carrying something like this

I did look at the rear beam from a FWD car eg escort or similar, or even better a saxo, independant rear suspension on those! the only down side is thatdue to the price of scrap at the moment itl probably be mor economical to buy indespension units new

Stuvy, if you use a rear beam from a FWD car you'll need to use the springs and dampers or the struts too, therefore you need to fabricate some top mounts for the springs/dampers/struts so you end up with an unnecessarily complicated and clumsy design. Better to just use something like those indespension units and keep the whole thing neat, simple and lightweight.

do the indespension items have a coil inside to give a little bit of flex?

What they are is a large piece of box section with a arm running through. They have rubber sections in all four courners of the box and thats what gives the flex

so it works with the tyre to give so 'extra' compression

i used to have a 280ce mercedes which was on hydraulic with no means of suspension only the tyre, even when the car hopped it only used the tyres side walls to stop 2 tonnes of M-B hitting the deck!

seeing as its only carrying a bike it might not need the suspension after all?
and when i do build one i will keep the CoG down low to help stop the roll and bounce and make loading unloading easier

this company were one of, if not the first to sell these, they are designed so that if the internal rubber fails the unit cannot fall apart, not the case with some of the cheap imported ones,

You're gonna need atleast 500kg I'd say, look on ebay, prolly be about £70/£80
You've got to think about what pcd hubs to get, depending what wheels you want to put on. 4" is for the old mini wheels, 100mm is on a lot of cars incl vauxhall, rover, peugeot, honda, toyota I think. 108mm is a common ford car size, and 5.5" is a large trailer/caravan size
Of course you can but brand new trailer wheels in all these sizes but it's cheaper to just go down the scrappy and nab wheels off an old banger.


Although not as much fun, you may find it cheaper to buy a 2nd hand trailer than building your own
