HTC Wildfire

Fancy getting myself a new phone, anyone got an HTC Wildfire and if so, how do you rate it?

* Or does anyone have any other suggestions for a smartphone for a sim-only tightwad?
(First one to suggest iPhone 4 gets banned unless they bung me half the cost towards it! )

Woz, have a look at the Orange San Francisco. They're available on payg for less than 100 quid and best of all can be unlocked online for free. It's a better phone than my HTC hero. A friend had a wildfire and the screen was really poor. They now have the san Francisco which they've just updated to android 2.2

Hi Woz,

I got one yesterday (through Virgin Mobile). I've not had a chance to play with everything on it yet, but so far it seems very slick (my baby sister tells me it's a cool kid's phone!). I went for it after my girlfriend's sister-in-law showed me Google Sky Map on hers, which is about as cool as a cool app can be!

Being my first smartphone it took a little bit of getting used to, but it's straightforward enough. Connecting it to my home wireless network (to help avoid ludicrous over-the-monthly-limit data charges!) was very easy. My only real gripe is that it doesn't talk to my Macs over Bluetooth, but that's no big deal for me since it works fine as a USB mass storage device. The screen isn't a patch on an iPhone/iPod touch but, taken on it's own merits, it's fine IMO. HTC Sense looks very good.

Not really fair to compare the wildfire or san fransisco to an iphone,as they are budget android phones ,but i've been impressed with both ,Android is great Wozz ,i have a Desire and have been very impressed,very slick ,i agree go compare the San francisco and the wildfire to any other £100 offerings

What's the Desire like? Or the Mozart for that matter? Any prefs on Windows or Android?

Thanks guys, the SF doesn't look as nice as the wildfire but the reviews I've come across rate it really highly and the screen looks way bigger.
MUCH cheaper than the wildfire too, even if I have to pay to have it unlocked.

I went from an older N95 ,s60 operating to Htc Desire ,screen size is much bigger so web pages load much better ...htc allows pinching and swipe movement to increase and decrease size (zoom) and makes navigation much easier .Desire has a 1ghz processor and is therefore very quick,allows for streaming video(you tube etc)...divx/xvid playback of films ,reasonable camera which i believe has been improved on the desire hd and z.....really is a computer in the pocket ,google maps,sat nav,pdf and office reader,facebook and twitter ,more than i know how to use ,gameplay is good too.....I've read that new windows will be very good as well,but android has google behind it and is being updated regulary at the moment ...Had the desire z been available i might have chosen it because of the slide out keyboard,but i'm happy with my choice ,as with everything Tec,it may be old hat before you get home with it

Are they offering any deals on the htc legend?...i almost went for that phone ,slighty smaller and less powerful than the desire ,nice looking alluminium case ,seems like most of the computer types i know have a Desire,but with the hd and z versions being released even the original Desire will become cheaper as it is surpassed,Samsung galaxy was the phone my desire was being compared with ,not sure if they have a budget version out as well

Both a little more than I want to pay a month tbh, can't find either of them for under £25pm unless I change to three network which I don't want to do. I don't use many call minutes but send quite a lot of texts which is why I went for the £10pm sim only deal and bought a phone off a mate instead of upgrading my handset.

I tell ee, my iPhone 3G rocks. It's just like having a mini computer. Not so sure about the excess cost of a 4g though. Hence I've not risked a banning...

Any iPhone is pretty much out of the equation. I know they're fantastic bits of kit but they're just too much money unfortunately.
