I’ll spare you the rant about 1.5 hours trying to print one page. Still unsuccessful.

It appears that, as supplied, the printer refuses to print unless I enrol in something called Instant Ink subscription service. There are cartridges fitted. It just won’t use them.

We print just a few pages a year generally. Is there a way round this? I just need to print a few wiring diagrams.

If not, it’ll be lobbed out of the window. In which case, some recommendations for one that simply works would be appreciated.

If the printer was cheap, or you've had it for years, you'll honestly save yourself grief and money by just binning it now and buying anything that doesn't have an HP badge.

Google "HP printer ink controversy" or similar to see that your stress is not yours alone.

As for recommendations, I'm sure 100 different ones will be along in a minute but I've never looked back from swapping to Brother.

Inkjets (of, pretty much, any make) need to be used often, otherwise they block up.

A cheap, second hand, laser, may be better for you going forwards.

Tried that, cheers. No good.
Web services, HP Instant Ink and ePrint all off:

If I take the offending black cartridge out, all lights flash on the printer and it refuses to do anything.

We have a HP printer and an instant ink subscription, it’s free, gives you around 10 pages a month, if you go over you pay a quid or thereabouts for another 10 pages. Works great for us as very occasional printers and has saved a fortune in ink cartridges. If the cartridge dries up through lack of use you report it and they send you out a replacement.

Had it something like 5 years and we’ve been quids in.

have you tried a reboot and not just change the settings and tried it ?

as sometimes a reboot is needed

i normally play with blocking programs via the firewall as a phone home will make the program invalid

or other alternative is unplug your internet as then there is no service to the net at all and then try it

I don’t mind a subscription option, but we only do a few pages a year, and I just run a test page or two through to clear the clogs. What they’ve done, is updated the firmware and locked out a previously working setup, regardless of internet connection.

mine would be far worse than that as i would make sure no one could use it again

and i wouldnt buy hp again either but i did that years ago and went to epson

What stayed my hand (or boot) was that it might have useful bits in it. Test bar, glass platen?

Bin it.
Keep the fuse from the plug (you'll never use that either).
Buy a laser printer.

Our hp worked ok for a while, then the router was changed and that was it - zilch, despite hours and hours trying various fixes, it was good at printing help pages - much pleasure throwing it out.

I threw my HP out, if you don’t use them regularly the print heads gum up, cartridges are a fortune.
I also bought a Brother, a couple of years old now and still works perfectly unlike an HP, it wasn’t expensive either.

There was recent concern that Brother was disabling third-party laser toners.
Not got a totally clear answer on it yet, but I discovered my Brother laser has a hidden menu to over ride it anyway, as long as I don't let it update from now on.

Yes, the HP2700 was the most difficult printer I've ever had. I think it was about a year between buying it and getting it working. Even then, I do not know what happened - it just started working.

Sometime about the year 2000, I bought an HP colour printer - it was the easiest bit of kit to set up and gave great results. Why have we gone backwards ; probably to do with profits!

In the past I have murdered (destroyed with violence) some printers but cannot recall which brands (suspect Canons).

“Why have we gone backwards?” Easy - subscriptions. Even though you already spent £50 or £500 on a printer, manufacturers have realised they would also like £5 a month from you for the next five or ten years.

It’s gouging - if they had simply given the printer away and required a subscription at least that would be transparent.

You and me too, in fact I could have written your email word for word... Indeed we have massively gone backwards, and everyone you ask says the same thing. I used to swear by HP printers, now I won't go near one.
