So consider this.
You have a small basic workshop and some spare time.
You need to plan for a future business incase anything happens to your current employer
What would you do?
This is EXACTLY my position. So consider this.

Good luck to you, whichever way it turns.Hence buying loads of kit currently, and sorting the workshop and barn with concrete floors etc.
Starts next week.
Good plan, Mat. Just being nosey but does your boss notice there's a Plan B coming for you and, if so, will that cause you any problems. Or is he ok as he can see what may well happen to the boat business? This is EXACTLY my position.
Last year wasn't good for the company I work for.
This year isn't looking good either.
If this continues, I won't have a job in two more years.
So I'm working on Plan B.
Welding, cutting, machining, basic car stuff, oil + filter changes, pads + disks.
engine rebuilds, on site repairs, marine / agricultural breakdown service...
That's my Plan B.
Find a niche and do that.So consider this.

Boss is cool, we have nothing to hide from each other, he's well aware of my plan B, I do just stick stuff in the works workshop without asking, then send him photos, doesn't really get used over the summer anyway. Boats being in the canal... Etc.Good plan, Mat. Just being nosey but does your boss notice there's a Plan B coming for you and, if so, will that cause you any problems. Just wondering if you have to kit the workshop under cloak of darkness so he doesn't see it!
I was expecting the worst from the pandemic - so spent a lot of time cutting costs and expenditure - so will reap the reward of this into the future.
I think that’s a good thing we have all been forced to do. I don’t mean screwing suppliers down for a cheaper price but just trimming stuff that costs with no return
one good thing from COVID for those who did it.
Seeing what went on initially I shut down my company and took a full time job as a CTO. The company I work for does forensic science, hence can’t
Lessons I learned from this.
2. Commercial real estate is about the worst possible investment now.
Global companies are closing offices like crazy. The new business park near me has no tenants, IT supplies like laptops and home office kit are selling out which is not helped by a global silicon shortage. Now that's a strange one, one of our clients is funded by some American investors and he is mad busy filling his boots with commercial property
