It’s possible that the new cam wasn’t faulty, but the fault that caused sudden failure of the twenty year old original cam suddenly is still there and killed the new cam in short order
With a roller follower it should have done better.
More investigation me thinks

To get it going id build up with weld , work out lift then blend in.
This may last but at least get production going
If its just a shaker with no particular timing duration maybe a eccentric will do the job.

I’d say your material needs to be hardened then ground into tolerance. Best person to recommend proper material would be @pressbrake1

There are other steels but En24 is very forgiving and easy to harden and temper though case hardened en19 would be very resilient to sny frequencies

Think, regardless of warranty, it would be worth getting in touch with your supplier/the bit manufacturer. If those pits are porosity, that's rubbish.

When you have 2 parts in contact with each other, one will wear away quicker than the other. If you harden this, whatever its in contact with may wear away. Which is the easiest/cheapest to replace.
If you weld it with A18 under Argon rich you could just about attain a martensitic structure (partially) if you quench from 900 oC (ish) so that could be a possibility (considering the above)

Some really great suggestions here, really is a great forum this . Short term solution was to fit a pretty worn replacement from a salvage shaker that was hidden away in the stores. Should keep things going until I can have a better go at it in the new year but I'm done until Jan .

So thought I would close this off for those interested in the outcome. Management ordered new part which is now fitted, and the cause has also been identified. The cam follower supplied last time was incorrect, it had the same profile as a bearing but with sharper edges sort of this shape [ , it should have had a radius on the contacting part like this ( instead. Basically what was happening as the whole gubbins cycled round was the sharp edge of the follower was scraping the surface away. You may wonder why the follower can be at an angle to the cam but it was designed this way and is necessary for the intended purpose. The new follower with radius will allow some slip across surface and that should be that. Thanks for all the advice offered
