I was one of the old school "Established Civil Servant" from an era where you were classed as a professional and were expected to work accordingly. Even today I can still legally countersign passport and firearms applications - although haven't done so for many years. My type of civil servants don't exist any more and the current "unestablished" offerings are probably just doing the job until a better position at McDonalds is availableIs there any difference between a civil servant and a retired civil servant though in terms of output?![]()

If I had my time again ? Who knows ? I quite fancied being an Undertaker.
Interesting that there does not seem to be any/many people on here who do run of the mill ordinary, basic wage jobs .
Just keeping our heads down, my last job was Materials Control, ie working with spreadsheets, SAP, and suppliers. Mundane and boring, unless you want a spreadsheet knocking up.Interesting that there does not seem to be any/many people on here who do run of the mill ordinary, basic wage jobs . Or are they keeping their heads down ? I feel somewhat inadequate, and maybe a bit ashamed that I have not done more with my working life. But I was always more interested in fiddling with stuff in the workshop/garage at home.

Odd my Mrs was told in careers when she wanted to be an undertaker….not to be so stupid women dont do that. As for fireman, Ive spent enough time in a nomex suit and BA set to know those boys are under paid and under valued. My missus' dream job, or mortician (I know, probably why I lie awake at night) I quite like the idea of being a firefighter but how long I would have stuck at it is the question. I don't think I would have changed much if anything though it would have been nice t have actually been paid for some of the stuff I did.
My youngest sister was told the best she could hope for was serving behind the counter in a shop. She served behind the counter, worked her way up to manager, then area manager of a group of shops while doing business quals at night school, she's now the business manager (basically 2nd in command to the head teacher) of a pair of schools, one of them was the one that predicted her career.Odd my Mrs was told in careers when she wanted to be an undertaker….not to be so stupid women dont do that.

I wanted to be a lollipop man and start work at 65, but as I approach the starting age Ive changed my mind. Would I do it different if I were to get another go, probably not, as Im still not really sure whatI wanted to do in the first place.
Not sure luck came into it. I have to admit, I thought I was living the dream, in the Philippines. On my 56th birthday I received my first pension cheque. I was stood on the roof garden of our luxury 3 story house, drinking a beer and thinking “I’ve made it, I’ve arrived, I’ve actually achieved everything I ever dreamed about”Lucky git?
I’m better off than many people, so I shouldn’t complain, but it’s still painful remembering the lofty heights I achieved in life, before dropping back to the real world.Gosh Morrisman, that sounds grim, hope things improved later in your life.![]()
An ex neighbour was an undertaker. He said in bad accidents the "deceased" had to be collected with a dustpan and brush ! Whenever he had a garden bonfire we used to say he was "doing a foreigner"If I had my time again ? Who knows ? I quite fancied being an Undertaker.
Sadly I have worked with many that fall in line with that. In fact the less you can do, the higher up in education management you seem to get. One of the many reasons I’m looking for a way out'Those that can, do - those that can't, teach...'

We all can only do what we think is right at the time, jobs, spending, saving, wifes, girlfriends etc….dont look back, just keep moving forward. If you seek change, only you can make it happen!Interesting that there does not seem to be any/many people on here who do run of the mill ordinary, basic wage jobs .
