How/Where/How much does it cost to Galvanise?

How do I go about getting stuff galvanised?

I'm making some mild steel boat racks, and they will be outside, and standing on the ground... so I don't really see the point in just painting.

I'm guessing I need to get bits galvanised and bolt together rather than weld the whole thing up (which would be a bit big to transport, never mind galvanise).

Cambridge/Peterborough Area btw if anyone knows anywhere in that area that I can get it done?

Dont know anyone near you, Yellow pages would be your best bet, Be warned there pricing structure is linked to the phases of the moon, along with the amount and size of vent holes they need and how many bits they will lose and bend

Weigh your job, it's about 50p a kilo + surcharges, which as snowcat mentioned are definately a complete mystery!
Make sure you get a quote first and give an inventory of parts to be in with a chance of getting the same stuff back.
They charge a premium for removing paint, drilling vent/drain holes etc.

Youll be supprised how big the stuff they dip can be. If you can transport it, they can probably dip it somewhere!

Your best bet will be to look at Wedge group or Joseph Ash

That also tells you the bath sizes. Dont go any bigger of youll get into double dipping.... theyre not keen on that anymore.
Do your own venting, of they will just blow holes in it with a gas torch

U have not had stuff galvanised for years now, but i used a firm calle Roebuck& clark,. They were in south yorkshire not far from Rotherham/sheffield.
dont know if they are in being now though, mabe some one will remember them on here and know for sure.

Sounds complex, but its just drilling holes in tubes box section etc, To stop presure build and to allow flow, doesnt matter where you put them there always be wrong

should give you most of the info you require, including advice on drilling any fabricated items to vent them.
It looks as though there are 2 galvanizing concerns on the go in the Peterborough area, so you're in luck.

( As well as handing in a written description of the items, I always take digital photographs of them, just in case any do ever go astray.
Mind you, I've been using Premier Galvanizing in Hull for over 4 years now, with about 160 chassis treated and they've never let me down in that respect. )

I was just charged £98.52 inc for two posts that weigh 78 kilos.

It was under 150 kilos so I incurred an extra charge

They charged for 78 kilos,

2 x posts dipped = £60
Zinc surcharge @36.25% = £21.75
Environmental surcharge @3.5% = £2.10

All plus vat.

Told you, Was the moon in its first quarter per chance?, The fuller the moon the more charges they add on.

By heck, that's a bit steep... £1.26/kg?
At first, I thought it might be 'southern' pricing, but that can't be so as you're in Wales.
Fwiw, the last consignment I had galvanized in Hull was £222.60 for 299 kg, which works out at £0.74/kg and includes all surcharges, VAT & return delivery.
( Minimum weight there is 70kg.)

Maybe ask the cheeky blighters for a quote before giving them your custom again?

I won't use them again Ken. I'll go to the Cardiff or Bridgend places next time and always ask for a quote first .
