Thanks for advice and suggestions.
Problem I have is weight limitations for an Invalid carriage - which is 150kg. The original Yamaha quad is already borderline at 135kg so I don't have much spare capacity for serious adaptations such as fitment of an alternative axle. There is also a max width requirement of 850mm.
FWIW plan is for the plastic bodywork to be removed and plastic trailer mudguards added to each wheel. Seat is going to be changed - I've a new low back lawn tractor item as well as a high back buggy seat. Both are lightweight / waterproof so it's a case of which fits better is is more comfortable. Original chunky / aggressive off road tyres are going to be swopped for turf items. I've already got a pair of second front wheels to replace the huge original rears. This will narrow the rear track a little as well. Then it's add front and rear lights (headlight not required) as well as indicators, hazard switch plus horn and mirror.
Whether original 4 stroke petrol engine will be retained is yet to be decided. "In the wings" I've got an electric motor from a two seater golf buggy that might be used - there again it could be a bit OTT
Biggest problem will be limiting speed and this is where electric power could be advantageous. What some commercial manufacturers do about weight limit on big mobility scooters is fit tiny batteries as standard so that the machine is under 150kg but has a very short range and then give the option of larger batteries - which almost everybody opts !
