I would think that being as old as the tank is, the neoprene gasket has probably fused itself to the tank and ring, so with that amount of surface area in contact its going to take a substantial amount of force to break it free.

If you're looking to replace it I think I'd make up a tool:

Remove wiring and banjo bolt
cut a bit of card to fit hole and push on it to get impressions of tabs
transfer to a thickish piece of steel
weld a socket in the middle and try that.

Meanwhile I think id get plenty of penetrant in there.

Just my 2p, maybe someone else will have a better idea!!

BMW use something similar but it has multiple teeth, the best thing that fitted was another ring up side down, so I welded a ring to a pas pulley to a socket, worked every time with a strong arm or even a ratchet,

Reminds me of a Renault 25 tank sender I had to extract once... found a piece of pipe of the right diameter, cut the relevant bits away to leave the required 'teeth' and cross-drilled it for a tommy bar. By the sound of it, cross-drilling for a scaffold bar might be needed

I read on here that ATF + Acetone is the canine's genitalia for this sort of application. I mixed some up but in was too thin in viscosity for a [new] trigger oil can to pump. Must add some thicker oil to the mix...

I'd have thought, as above ^^^, that drifting it would work but it seems not. Have you tried striking down on it all round the OD? Not with the BFH, obviously.

Build a well of putty or Plasticine round the retaining ring. About 1' from it. Then one more as close as you can to the ring.
Fill it with a cotton rag. Add boiling water and leave.

I guess you have tried to remove it with a tool or a hammer and punch?

Add some penetrating oil on the inside of the ring.

The tap to tighten it up, you are looking for a fraction of a movement, then tap the other way. It will rock loose.

They are a bugger, as some manufactures will use a liquid sealant.

Gentle, but firm action with the hammer is needed.

There is a tool, most manufactures garages have one. May be a biscuit bribe with them may help.

Long soak in WD40 - then multiple kettles of hot water poured over it - even to the point of heat cycling - letting it cool and then heating it up.

I always used a 2lb hammer and a brass drift for extraction.

I have done a lots of these over the years - and yes they can be murder tight...
