How to repair this?

A joker at our club thought it would be amusing to fire jacketed factory .44 Magnum at our cowboy action steels.He had only damaged one before I got to him..

I will bill him for a replacement but for now I need to repair this one. The craters are about 12mm diameter and almost penetrate the 10mm thick EN8 disc, leaving star shaped cracks on the back. Should I try to fill the holes with weld or weld in a plug? I have a 160 amp inverter MMA but only 3.2mm and 2.5mm 6013 rods.

in not sure how en8 reacts to heat but I would just fill them with weld.

What's a cowboy action steel do?

it is a target specifically for a type of shooting called cowboy action. The ammo used doesn't damage the steel, however a .44 magnum will damage most things

7018/7016 to fill the holes and cover the cracks on the back I'd say. I'd have thought these were typically the sort of electrodes you were using for these targets anyway.

Other that that, if this character is paying for a new one and it doesn't particularly matter what happens if it comes apart, bodge it up with a 6013.

This is the only cowboy we want here, "tighter membership controls!!" one of the things we did was you came for a couple of months & if a single person voted against you did not becoming a member. Worked for us for 20 years stopped shooting when the gov decided we were all potential killers & purchased our pistols

It worries me that you describe someone as a joker but he has access to a firearm, never mind a .44 calibre weapon! I am pro gun club and was against the knee jerk handgun ban. We have access to weapons at work and if we think they should not be issued one, then they don't get one.

the sad and worrying truth of it is that there are a surprising amount of people with access to firearms that I wouldn't trust with a tea spoon. for instance, the farm I shoot on had police called out about 2 years ago, report of someone shooting towards houses with a shotgun. firearms team arrived, tooled up to the eyeballs and were taken onto the land, only to find 2 blokes who had had their tickets for less than a week, with o/u shotguns shooting at the trees. when questioned they claimed they didn't realise there were houses behind the trees. after a count up of the empty shells they had fired between 150-170 shots ranging from bird shot to no4...needless to say they didn't have their guns for long.

Exactly my point if properly regulated and policed we would be able to enjoy these sports. I had this conversation with my son who had said to me guns kill! My answer is that a gun is an inanimate object controlled by a human. Are we going to ban motorbikes next?

funnily enough my brother is exactly the same. he is 16 this year and my mother is desperate to get him into a hobby that he enjoys. I suggested he come out with me and bust some clays, I have the guns, the shells, he just has to point n pull so to speak and if he enjoys it we can sign him up to the club after his trial period and then look at getting him a ticket. his reply, guns are for criminals that want to rob banks or kill people.

All our club members undergo 6 months probationary period and a rigorous NRA training programme before being voted into membership. The person in question was an experienced shot, as you can see from his group, but was unused to shooting at steel targets. The range controlling officer at the time was equally to blame for letting him do it as he should have known the ammunition restrictions for steels. This happened during an all-purpose target session, before I arrived to run the western shooting sessions. We prefer the term "western action shooting" because of the negative connotations of the term "cowboy" in the UK. Our discipline is closely controlled, with one-to-one range officer to competitor ratios and a comprehensive training programme covering rifle, pistol and shotgun handling.

Just plug it up and grind it off. Consider there is quite a bit of armour grade plate knocking about ex-military contracts a guy with some scrap or spare could be a real friend. This sort of stuff will stop any round you can fire indoors and i have used it up to .308 class rifles outdoors.

At the end of the day if someone strikes through it your backstop and safety is still adequate is it not?
