How to refit rear view mirror?

Take your time clean and clean again if refiting the old mirror clean the twice as well no sticky stuff left over or it will fall off again

3M VHB Tape - I'll post you some if you can't get hold of some pads locally! Bloody great stuff, it's what most adhesive pads for dash cams, etc., are made of.

I've used Halfords double suded tape for niw. Its on but bounces about a bit too much but a good temporary fix. I'll order the proper pad when I get home.

I've seen a screen crack when a mirror was superglued on too (after someone else warned him it would happen) - no idea of the mechanics behind it but I've heard enough people repeat it that I wouldn't do it myself.

I've had good results with the Loctite kit pictured.

@chunkolini - you are aware that the mirror will come off the mount aren't you? There will be a grub screw and the (probably alloy) mounting block will slide out (downwards in the picture you posted). You can then glue that block to the screen and give it 24 hours to cure before hanging the mirror back on it. Just make sure you put the block back on the right way up - not me so I could laugh about it.

I can only think that super glue dries rock hard so as the screen expands and contracts around the glued bit it creates a tension point

Well, I can't find a single reference on the net for superglue causing windshields to crack. Plenty advising not to use it because they fall off later, but nothing about it actually causing cracks, except for what I read here.

It does. A friend did it a few years ago.

Fell of twice with halfords tape, I think the pad on the mirror back needs a proper seeing to, another attempt tomorrow

+1 for the vhb tape it’s probably what they used when the car was built.

I’ve used the Loctite mirror kits several times on various cars , way better than double sided tape IMO , but the last time I wanted a kit I was in Eurocarparts, the muppet serving me insisted on a registration number or else he wouldn’t be able to find it, really screwed him up when I told him the car has a Q plate!
