Long time ago, My xk150 SU petrol pump packed in, A couple of new replacements didn't last more than a few weeks, Used to keep on the move when they stopped working by leaning out of the drivers door, reaching under the sill and giving the pump a good smacking with my hand, And that would get me another half mile or so, When they wouldn't change the faulty pumps anymore. Stripped it down,Turns out that SU had replaced an insulating piece where the 12v supply went through the body and was soldered to the coil wires, Two bare soldered joints separated by only this new insulator, and it was absorbing moisture and shorting out the supply. replaced it with a piece of plastic and no more trouble, The pump was one with a square body and fitted with a short rubber breather tube. Does anybody know which model that would have been?
I had an accelerator cable snap so simply swopped it over for the choke cable and got home on a "hand throttle"![]()

Someone I knew of was .... err up to no good in the back of his minivan up a rough farmtrack, got rather energetic & bounced the pump down on a stone & broke it. Needed more than new points after that. Dirty lucky sod. Also had an Austin seven (Mini) that had a dodgy fuel pump...even with new contacts in would only run for a few miles before cutting out.....ignition off and then back in again and carry on...ran it like that for several months.....
that would double its valueThe clutch cable on my Hillman Avenger pulled through the bulkhead on my way back from Weymouth with my mates so I pulled over, had a rummage in my toolbox, pulled the cable back through and locked it in place with a pair of mole grips.
I sold the car many months later with the mole grips still on it.![]()

I bought a Landrover from a dealer, didn't think the brakes were up to much and when I investigated I found a hose clamp on the rear brake hose. It came with a brand new MOT too.
bet they were going round in circles as to what went wrongI remember a story about a Fiesta straight from the factory that had disc brakes on one side and drums on the other.
