I was thinking about that the other day, a piece of fancy stone worktop is probably surface platey enough for me, and I know where I can get a bit.

I used some old duct tape (not very sticky so I don't mind wasting it) but it didn't come out very straight. Does alu tape stay straight better?

I told you all I cut it but I really found it like that on the airfield.

I just happen to have loads of ally tape, leave the backing on, and its ideal for wrap arounds.

I usually use a bit of paper to mark around pipe but I didn't have a big enough bit. Wallpaper sounds like a plan as I don't know where to get conveyer belting.

Newspaper, tape a few A4 sheets together, (if you overlap each piece by a few inches, you have your edge for the next piece to align with). Pretty much anything can be put to use.

You've never been stuck in the middle of nowhere and had to improvise, have you. Whack a piece of ply or something on the floor. Absolute flatness isn't necessary. If you're spinning the bottle, the height would always be the same relative to the piece currently being scribed.

I know this doesn't need to be very accurate, I mean for other jobs a bit of worktop as a surface plate. Just forget I mentioned surface plates.

I said I have no flat surfaces in jest as all by table and floor space is cluttered. I know a workbench or floor would be fine for a BBQ.

With regard a surface plate, I'm guessing marble should be close enough for most work. I have an old marble hearth knocking about somewhere for that future purpose.

Flat surface pencil in a cotton reel Just roll it around,also good on skirtin boards.

They are for mitre cuts, u can effectively make your own 90 degree elbows and 45's out of pipe. There's a chart on it as well. I've never use the markings. I just wrap it around, mark it and then cut the pipe. There's different lenght ones u can buy.

for holding the bottel i use big ratchit strap a strap it to the leg of the welding bench (needs to be bolted down) you could use a tree i gess and for cutting i use an old indexing table with a nice litle stand i got from the scrapyard i normaly have small motor driving it hence the sprocket attached gives a perfect cut with no marking out all i need to do is drill a starting hole

I'ld just cut it with a thin cutting disk on a grinder. Wrap a piece of paper around it, mark it and cut. Easy as pie.
