How to galvanise hinges

Hi all

I've been trying to figure out to galvanise my pond covers with hinges so the hinges can still be used. I don't often galvanise my covers but occasionally I get the request. Normally I wouldn't put hinges on a cover being galvanised because I figured they would useless after coating but this job is for a school so there needs to be hinged sections so they can access the pond relatively easily.

I've spoken to the galvanisers and they cant give me an answer but surely there must be a way round it?

Any advice would be really appreciated!!

Wouldn't the holes just fill up with the zinc?

you can drill them out. If you galvanised the hinge it would seize up with zinc.

Can't you use stainless steel hinges and attach them with bolts after the rest is galvanised?

Mechanically fix stainless hinges after galv would be my preferred method. Alternatively have short tubes welded to each side and a stainless pin. Allow a bit of tolerance and expect to have to drill the tubes out after galv.

Because the galvanize is fairly soft it is normally straight forward to drill out hinge and fixing holes etc afterwards.

Make it hinge less. Have the hinge end fit to the fixed part using upper & lower plates so that it can still be locked shut but when unlocked can be raised or even removed.

Or even use a U channel over a round bar.

I wouldn't recommend using stainless with galv steel as the two will react and corrode.

just drilling out after galv is the way to go.

Thanks for the help! If the hinges are welded flush to the steel I could drill the holes out because of the angle of the bit going into the hole? I did hear somewhere that I could use fire clay and the chisel that out as it would be easier that trying to get the zinc out. Otherwise I might just have to go with justme's suggestion and make it hingless.

What about agricultural type hinges?

Plenty of play in that type to allow the galving to stay on. Secure with small padlock through pin.

Or trailer rear ramp type? Again plenty of free play.
