I'm very aware of the differences between walking and weaving free, I'm also aware heat input does not change whether you walk or weave, I agree the weave in the op post is wider than I personally think suitable. It is apparent to me your good at following your weld procedure to the letter. My job is a little different to that, I have done plenty of wps following I now rather than follow them spend more working outside of them to support people with problems, there for I'm more required to understand why the values are what they are rather than set my machine and go.

I personally can't see a problem with walking the cup, perfectly acceptable when done correctly. where the problems arise is when people use the over elaborate "Hollywood" weaves and sacrifice weld integrity for something that looks pretty. There is no denying the skill and consistency needed to produce porn welds but folk need to remember just 'cos it looks flash doesn't always mean it is structurally sound

depends who wrote the WPS or often who or what he copied and pasted it from If they know anything practical of the job or if they just read all about it once from another theorist
Do exactly what your told you have to do or stretch it as far as you can get away with for your own end IMO. Arguing the toss here about best procedure is pointless as it depends on what the end user says he requires right or wrong.

That weave doesn't look that wide to me. Unless I'm looking at it wrong it looks like an early filling pass. I think that the photo makes it look a lot bigger than it actually is.

For me following a wps is important as it (should be) backed up with qualified testing.
I believe it's more important to understand it and understand the implications of going out side of it from a welding point of view not a p45 point of view. Why is the current range 100 amps +|- 5 for example what happens from a mechanical point of view if you exceed it to 120, I agree again with back purge, it's acceptable to walk and free hand weave. But there are more reasons why we do and don't rather than its because we are paid by the inch or the procedure says so.

I have in previous job roles helped to write and qualify procedures when I was running a shop making custom pressure vessels all ASME VIII spec out of duplex and super duplex aswell as CuNiFe and inconel. So contrary to what you believe I do have a very good knowledge of welding to back up my skills.
Eitherway, regardless of what you think a WPS is there for a reason the WPS has been qualified and backed up with mechanical testing. I follow the WPS because I like to be employed and make money.
As a welder your there to do a job and that's to weld, not to question the WPS put Infront of you. That's someone else's job and responsibility. You try and pull a stunt like doing it YOUR way when your offshore and expect and NRB! Not just offshore, on any proper job....

The procedure won't tell you to free hand or walk the cup... I can assure you all the big money welders walk the cup for the purpose of being able to weld faster and thus put more money in our pockets! Ask any of the lads who work for the big payers like Alstoms or PJD.... Hell, even Babcocks!

My freind who worked for babcocks gave me a guys number who works there. He said the goverment funded training has finished. I could do an apprenticeship but I'm 24 and have a little family to support. The wages while training wouldn't be enough for me to justify it at the min. I really want to get trained but finding it hard what route to take. Te guy I spoke to at babcocks said I could go down for a skills assesmeant for around £180 I think. Need to look into it a bit better but everyone seems to give diferent advice.

I think your missing the point of what I believe as you've put it. I've not disagreed with any post you've wrote I've just backed mine up. I agree wps following is critical and I know what happens when there not ad eared to. I have followed them for many years and like your self had input in there development. I would never entertain someone to do it there own way on a job or application that's just suicide. If we take 10 steps back to the general post title. How to produce a weave Tig weld you'll find the points I made on this subject are pretty accurate. As wps, off shore, on shore, plate, pipe, etc were not part of the question. I think the answers were more to be based around how to do it and what can go wrong with it. Ps that's a nice portfolio you have, I'm sure the OP will appreciate your answers to those questions with that experience behind you.

I'm from lincoln. Im coded in mig. Mostly do alloy mig. I can TIG but I wouldn't say its to a professional level. I've only ever done none critical stuff. I've got my own tig now and am trying to teach myself the basics and get comfortable then I'm hoping to get some professional training at try to get coded.

Are you looking to earn a good living or prove a point in life? There is a ton of money to be made outside of code work if you use your head and you will get to see those kids grow up to boot. How many made personal millions from it? I know two who did this bashing out gates over the last twenty five years or so and neither even started off as skilled / time served.

I just like to weld. At the min I was employed as a welder but build commercial vehicles from 3.5 to 36 ton flat beds to curtain siders. We have a huge contract for luton vans at the min and there is barly any welding on them. Welding is what I enjoy I would like a welding job. I've looked into doing stuff and have made a few gates and dog kennels in the past getting them fully gavinised ect but there does not seem to be much money in them now not the basic stuff anyway. There is always some guy down the pub who can do it cheaper. What I personaly want to do is become a pipe welder.

I think I need to have a ring around a see if any company's would give a skills assessment and employ from there if I do a good job that is.

You'll still to gain codes for pipe welding. No getting away from that. But you never know a good company may put you through them if you appear to show them skills and competence in a weld test.

No but I had a hand in some orbital there around the same time they were doing some STT.
I do sub arc tho but it doesn't pay the money so never bother
