You only generate a random pattern of binary numbers (either 1 or 0)
In linux i would use dd if=/dev/urandom > /dev/sdX this would write random 1's and 0's to my hard drive where sdX the X is the letter of my hard drive.

Unless we're talking national security, pretty much any physical damage you do to the drive would make data recovery more expensive than any low level fraudster would gain.
I mean, peeling off the "do not remove this sticker",and blowing some dust in a drive with an airline would render the data irretrievable by anyone who did not have the equivalent of a clean room.
Mail fraud, or virtually any other fraud would be more probable.

as above to much thinking unless your a massave company person with millions on the bank
use the 0/1 to wipe the drive this will take a few hours to a few days
or as long as you hammer the carp out of it
you can be sure its gone no one in there right mind will just picka radom hard to get info off on the hope it will provide a good amount of return

A company on the estate where I worked did secure data destruction and would put the complete drive through a giant shredder, doubt if anyone could recover data from a handful of swarf!.
Oh you could read the 1's and 0's just fine from the swarf, it's putting them back in the correct order that's the hard part

Stick the platter (shiney disc) in a vice and turn it into dust with an angle grinder?.
Have you got any links about this? I have over written disks with random 1's and 0's and have always beleived the data on them can not be recovered. Granted I have only done this with small disks which don't take a long time and have done several passes on the same disk. Then I have installed a new operating system and then donated the computer to the local charity shop. For larger disks, I have used Dban boot and nuke disk eraser but again I believe (and I could be wrong) this operates by writing 1’s and 0’s to the disk but using more complicated algorisms.
Don't get me wrong I was not deleting any state secrets just cleaning my old computers before passing them on to charity to be reused.

A hard solution that is reliable is to remove the platter and fire it in a stove (like your wood stove). The platter is aluminium, coated with ferric oxide to hold the bits. By heating it the coating flakes off and shatters up. This makes it incredibly hard to recover.
TLDR;
Short on time - fire the platter.
Got lots of time - DBAN on milspec.

My favoured method is to subject the offending platters to about 3000 degrees but got my thinking now and what effect would a demagnetiser have on the platters?

For practical purposes format the drive, delete the partitions, reformat then take a hammer to it making sure you physically damage the platterns
