railway sleepers 15 quid a popThanks for the quick replies.
The wall is holding back chalk and maybe a foot or two of soil at the most. The total length of the wall will be 10-12m.
I like that idea of shuttering it and filling it with rebar and concrete. But that's a fair amount of concrete isnt it? And how would I get all the air pockets out?
It's chalk. It's not going anywhere.
Arc tourist, that looks ok for temporary works, but i'm looking at a more permanent/prettier solution.
Also if I stuck rebar into concrete, won't the concrete just absorb ground water and cause the steel to rust?
I did think about gabions, but you're right, they're not cheap, and they're also stupidly large. I'm not sure how thick this wall needs to be but I reckon maybe a foot at the most? The existing retaining wall is made of a single skin of bricks and is well over 50 years old. it's held up so far but it is bowing out.
And lastly, I was looking at a modular solution to cut down on cost and build time. I found railway sleepers could be used with H section beams between each row. Not sure if it would work out cheap though.
