How to brush treat ? ally sheet ?

Hi all

i ma looking for some ally sheet to make a splash back/surround for the cooker on the boat and i seem to be finding only basic finish ally sheet and i am after a brushed style effect as in what you get with SS sheet.

I am going with ally as it is easy for me to bend than the SS.

How can i go about doing the brushed effect myself on the ally if i find some at a good price.

I am thinking a flap wheel on a drum sander i have like this if i can also find any drums for it.

guess thats the way to do it BUT it needs to rotate VERY slowly,,,,,thinking out loud the factory would use a full width scratcher...u just may get tram lines........take care........

You need a scotch pad rather than flap wheel.

Once you break the surface of the ally it will always make your fingers or anything else you touch it with go black, sealing it with a clear lacquer will do a temporary job but will peel off fairly quickly unless you can use a self etching one, if such a thing is available, alternatively get it anodised,
Stainless is the only way to do a job like this, it needn't be very thick, 0.8mm or 1mm will bend easy enough with a little care

u can easily brush stainless using 600 grade wet and dry on a sanding block long strait strokes till u get the desired effect then rub over long strokes with a green scotch pad

Darn, never thought of having sealing it properly so sod that then.

SS it is then, i have found this supplier on ebay, only need small bits so mite aswell get my cut list and order from here. Proper job i guess then.

I would go to a local sheet metal engineers/company but just dont have the time anymore after work.

I have big vice and i will use a few lengths of steel to bend a flange on it then SS screw the lot together.

You could always put an engine turned swirl pattern on it, or are you just after straight brushed finish?

doesnt really matter as long as it looks good.

Only ever seen straight brushed finish on SS i think.

Off to google and look at the engine swirl now


Ah, i call that fish scales lol. Prefer straight brushed.
