6GR is 6G restricted. Its not mig welding is Cas Shielded Flux Core, so I'm guessing they mean dual shield.
6G restricted means iirc, there is a flange about 10-20mm above the weld in 45 degrees position. It may also include that you cannot change your amps between each step once set.

hi guys I'm currently in progress to booking my boseit and mist, I was just wondering how fussy are they on the medical for the colour blind test, I'm not completely colour blind but I do struggle with the tests where there is a hidden number inside other colours, would this be something I have to worry about? thanks

I don't think they even test you for it on the medical, can't remember it's been 18 months since my last one and the doc came out to my house to do that one? I'd make sure you declare it though (if asked) just to be safe, as said above unless you are going for specific job then it shouldn't be a problem.

I have been in the oil industry for most of my working life, about 30 years or so, the majority of that offshore in various places.
It's been great - up til now. Things are very different in this current oil downturn. There is MUCH less construction going on. The few welders we still have here are what I'd call "maintenance welders", making up replacement piping spools, supports and the like.
Now is definitely not a good time to be looking for a job doing anything offshore. Staff numbers are being cut to the bone by some companies just to reduce losses, even so they're still nowhere near making a profit. It's not a long-term career at the moment.
Don't want to be a pessimist but I know from personal experience what is going on, and things are really quite bleak. I spoke to a sparky today who had been looking for a job in the North Sea and was getting offers of 20 quid an hour, and I guess they will get someone even at that price. The spark just laughed at them and told them not to be silly.
BTW I have always been tested for colour-blindness at offshore medicals but not sure if it would be a fail if found to be colour-blind.

This man is correct, ive been offshore for 25 years, worst Ive seen, and dont think its going to improve anytime soon. Dont waste your money, go build wind turbines or something.

If you're wanting to do welding try getting a job onshore at some of the pipeline spool bases or bundle fabrication yards. duck all work at the moment though. but it is essential experience, and they code you per job. As some of the tolerances are insane, especially when you're hanging off the back of a pipeline boat when both ends of the product are moving and you have to weld with zero defects (especially if it is forming part of a dynamic riser) and the ramp is at a 45degree angle and the floor is the same angle. It's normal for those guys to be welding 12 hours at a time, pass after pass, and if it fails at any of the stages it has to be cut out and done again. They only recruit from the guys in their pipeline spool yards, as they have at least got the history of being coded for each project and type of pipe and liner. And at the peak it was $480,000 a day for the pipelay ship I was on, so cut outs cost money and they need to know 110% that you are unlikely to have a weld fail before they even put you into a pool of guys they would consider putting out in the field. The rest of the boat works roughly even time, but the welders are on 6/3 or 8/4 rotation, so it's a long time away from home. but again they have had their redundancy and marching orders due to the reduced construction work out there. So there are fewer of them to do what work is left.

Might I just point out £16 an hour can be easy enough obtained on shore without silly travel staying in digs etc. Contracting if your any good. You might get more depending on your location
On cost pay is ridiculous for paye lads who can and you need to find them something every day. Agency staff? Well at least you can get rid easy

A lad that works for me has had a few years on the rigs, reading between the lines its not a game for a married man or someone in a relationship. He also reckoned any money they made over and above a standard rate was blown the second the chopper landed , there was a race to the whorehouse`s and nightclubs.

We're not all quite that wild! I do 2 on 2 off, I have been offshore or in the industry around the world for over 20 years, the time away can be hard sometimes however the time at home more than makes up for it - with holiday's I am at work less than 6 month a year (Overtime bumps it back up but I'm greedy!). In all honesty when I'm at work its much like being in my workshop - my job is my hobby and an interesting fault or brakedown makes the day fly by.
As others have said the industry is in a bad way at the moment, however we and several other companies are planning to start drilling again so things are looking up (I have a suspicion that the American election result will push the oil price up over the next few years......)

This is utter ******** most of us with a good career have at least one divorce....some 4 or 5. But suspect they would have had the same working at home.
Live fast die young save on pension contributions....
As for the whore houses and night clubs...those were the days working in the construction yards abroad, when building the dam things!
I could tell you stories of pairs of dusky maidens, lines of coke and partying till the sun came up...but....
one, it would get censored.
two, its memories ill save for the old folks home, when those around my say wish id tryed that, I will smile and wet myself.
Three, it gets boring after about 6 months.
