Think you need to mount the switch to maybe a piece of pcb or similar material that is bigger giving more options to mount it. Maybe using the cable tie pads (with sticky backs) that allow cable ties to loop through then cable tie?

a rats tail is the switch on a bit of curled wire for 'tactical' applications. the one i have is a standard 'T' series back cap with rats tail that has a on/off latching button and a momentary button too, its the momentary button i use most.
on my rifles i used to use a self adhesive velcro pad on the stock and the switch, but i dont want anything permanent on my shotguns as i only use this gun with a torch on one piece of land maybe 3 times a year and only use it then becasue firearms officer wont clear the land for any rifle calibres so shotgun is the only option and its easier to put a t20 red lamp on the shotgun than try and attach my photon xt night scope to it (shotgun doesnt have a dovetail)

the switch unit is just a rectangle that is wrapped in insulation tape pretty much. the lead is hardwired into the battery cap of the torch

How is the actual torch attached ?
What I'm thinking is if secure then how about an "arm" attached to torch that then comes back to hold the switch in the position you want.

have already mentioned above why i dont want to use velcro, i dont want anything left on the stock when im not using the torch, this is primarily my wildfowling gun, it get wet and muddy and having something stuck to the stock would make it difficult to clean and would trap moisture

i miss quite often when shooting on the wing but very very rarely miss when shooting foxes, i miss more with a rifle than a shotgun (havent missed with this one yet but missed with others) but then again im usually shooting at 150-200 yards with a rifle, a max of 50 with the shotgun

If it's a working piece rather than a show piece, I'd be thinking sod it to temporary fixings and making a proper detachable fixing worth a jot. A couple of screws and a baseplate are easily cleaned. They'll be a lot less awkward to clean than other parts of the gun.
p.s: Is it just my eyesight, or does that photo of the switch still look like something just bound in tape?

if i was regularly using it with a torch i would have a permanent fixture, but as i say its maybe 3 times a year i use it, infact the last time i used this gun with a torch was in march...

Two different diciplines, I used to be good with a shotgun but when I started shooting rifles 30 odd years ago my shotgun skills slipped. Now I class myself as very average with a shotgun. What rifle cal do you use? I have 243 and 270, 22, fac air and have just applied for a 17 hornet. The 22 does nothing these days really, fac air does the job it used to do.
