6mm wire is OK.......
And drill a hole at the end of the splits to (hopefully) stop them spreading.Grind out, weld and weld on a diamond shaped plate over the repaired area, Dont weld on a square ended patch, you will just move the stress point,
chip all the rust away...like bright spark says weld up the cracks but u wont get neat welds due to contamination....
but do ur best then get some 4-5mm plate folded and blted on.....
BUT go at least a foot either side of the cracks and use at least 10mm dia bolts and nylock nut.....
better photo's would help[ of the location on the chassis....might even pay to make the repair plates even longer....
without photos it's just a guess........

When welding should I do it in small stitches? Say about 25mm long?Grind out, weld and weld on a diamond shaped plate over the repaired area, Dont weld on a square ended patch, you will just move the stress point
