I never got to do proper metal work at school, by the 80's H&S had probably stopped all that at secondary schools.
When I bought my lathe, I was astounded by the advice of my father (artist) and next door neighbour (electrician), who new what they were talking about sixty years later. Neither machinists, but both at some point in their comprehensive / grammar school education had both been taught some form of basic machining.
Modern education. But then what proportion of modern society needs a lathe? Or know how to use one?
I am often astounded by how much skill and knowledge there is on this forum, but then machining can seem a complete dark art of you've had no introduction to it. (Like welding).
Then, obviously, if you're a professional machinist (or welder), this is all common sense.
Once again I thank this forum, I would never have bought a lathe or tig welder, without it. This forum answers all your stupid amateur questions, and then helps you learn to sort it out.
Watching other people, learn, restore and develop new skills is a rare insight, and this forum is just great for that.
