How much power does a 1/2hp motor need to start ?

That rating/value has always been one of my pet irks too. It's like they just magically pluck a number from thin air, or, as Snooper suggests, catch the last seen reading before something goes into explosion mode. Those amplifiers where they're rated stupidly high, yet a cats fart would be louder, are prime examples. You could get better output from two cans and a string.

I like the computer speakers they rate at 180 watts, my 50 watt practice amp will drown them out no problem

but was the impedance of the amps out put matched to the bulbs resistance my guess is the bulb was far lower then the load on the amp should have been

defantly not matched but i was just effectivly useing the output stage to pwm drive the lamps to make sure it chould handel power without getting hot. it's plenty capable of driveing the same amount of power into the cabs. each channel has a large toroid feeding it iirc they are 65-0-65 rated at about 300VA, not perfect but i built the amp when i was a student and the toroids were Free, harvested from unused large pwersupplys that went obsolite

only problem though is you risk frying your outputs if its to low as it will be seen as a short, there are some 2 ohm stable pa amps out there but not so many speakers to match them 2 ohms is very low

Can't say as I can ever recall personally seeing a 2 Ohm speaker.

You have any photo's of that unit of yours Danny? Like to see good homemade units.

no me neither all my pa gear is 4 ohm so you would either have to run without full power or run 2 4 ohm drivers in series to achieve the 2 ohm loading

i know driveing lamps with amps is not the best idea but it seemed a good one at the time. and it survived.

no all my amps are 4 ohm I don't really see the point in 2 ohm if I wired a pair of duals in series and the 2ohm amp went I wouldn't be able to use a 4 ohm amp as it would go into protection mode

ok guys here is something I need to know.
can I just take off 1 end of the motor to see if the contacts are ok on the start switch clutch gizmo ?
I think it will come off easy enough at the end without the pulley on, I am thinking maybe something not quiet right down there.
as thinking back I did not have a problem until I tried to get the pulley off ?
could this have moved the shaft a tiny bit away ? could tapping the pulley back a on a touch have dislodged a bit of crud and it fell onto contacts etc ?
it wouldn't hurt to clean anything in that area if I can get to it. (would it ).
OR is it a case of a millions things jumping out at me and needing special tools to put it all back together ?
I don't mind it taking a while to do it, and have some stuff to clean electrical stuff inc some tiny points files etc.

I do hear the loud click when it slows down and almost stops. so I think the clutch is working, but electrical contacts maybe dirty ??????
originally when I first got the drill I pushed the start button the motor made a loud very click every time and just when straight to full motor speed.
I used the drill perfectly for 2 days with it switching on and off like a dream, then i went to change pulley belt speed and noticed bottom pulley cracked
so tried to get pulley off, it only came of about 1/16th of an inch so I tapped it back on.
its only really since this that I have to use chuck nearly all the time to start it. ??????

I know it could very well be capacitor, and in the process of getting one sorted out, but I would like to know its all nice and clean inside the housing.
you know when you have a funny feeling !!! well I have that about the contacts inside the motor.
the outside of the motor was full of dust that looked like it had been there for years..


still a bit confused, but getting there.(I think)

I am not trying to cause a problem by saying this but please keep this topic on track, its wavered off too far with talk of speakers and ohms.
I need help in solving a problem with a 1/2 hp electric motor not talk about speakers guitar amps.
I am sure this is a very good thing to talk about, but in its own section.

The thread has now. Seriously, just take it in your stride and skip the parts which are of no relevance to you. You'll get the info you need, but threads have a good chance of including unrelated info along the way. It's just the way things tend to go.

Whip the rear plate off. Nothing will magically jump out or try escaping. Slip rings and similar setups are uncomplicated things. Just take a photo or two as you go along on the disassembly, just to remind yourself how things go back together if needs be. One random link from a quick Google search which may give you a rough idea of what you're going to be seeing.

I think some exotic electrostatic speakers used to have (probably still do) very low ohm drivers, sure some were as low as 2 ohm.

I have a power amp that has nearly 1kw power consumption strange how these cheap stuff barely use any yet output so much supposedly. Started back in the 80's if I remember correctly the arms race of who says their amp has more power.

Aren't you just a bundle of joy. You've been given plenty enough info in this thread already to do what you've asked about. With an attitude like that though, I'd guess you're on your own from now on in.

People offer their advice and knowledge for free on here. It's not a service, and there is no entitlement. Pay for a sparky if you want dedicated advice and help.
