i used to be a bit bad at this but not now a days if i spend a few hundred (to be honest not normaly that much as realy only buy hand tools not mechines like some on here) i just say how much it is i need it i need it thats it i earn money from my tools and they make me much more than they cost

now do i need to upgrade to brushless or have 3 of some thing now thats what she may not know as she dont keep a track of that (i have had you not got one of them ? oh no this is differant is my reply as she has no clue )

I have included my tooling spend in the amount and , much like @Brad93 has just mentioned, destroy a couple end mills and a decent reamer and it is £100 plus instantly, as far as actual tools are concerned I have started a small collection of Milwaukee M12 tools and I will be buying the drill and driver next. It isn't about "Upgrading" it is about weight, I have taken the conscious decision to reduce the effort I need to make to carry tools about and use them, the M12 stuff is just fantastic from this perspective.

I enjoy buying tools, I like researching them and understanding their capabilities and uses. I find it interesting.

How much do you squander spend invest in tools per month on average?

I spend about 200- 500 on average. Sort of thinking I need to cut back... but its all good stuff that I will use. Also what is your use level? Hobbyist or is self employed etc. I am a hobbyist.

Tomorrow I'm going to hopefully buy a large 220L blast cabinet so that's an example of where this month I'll be spending £500 or so all together. I do try to recoup some of that. For example I'll sell on my current small bench top blast cabinet and get a little back.

Never kept track of my tool spend so just for giggles I have just added up what I've spent at Screwfix, eBay and Amazon this month and it's about £150

Then today my Bosch battery grinder wouldn't work, not had it apart yet, hoping it's an easy fix but it not then there's another chunk of cash gone replacing it

I'm saving ATM and expect to shell out 4-6 grand on my next tool, currently working 7 days a week, my home stuff has been cut back to almost zero in order to get there, that's if I don't burn out before then, my newest tool yet to be delivered a vertical band saw

Machines, tools and consumables might be an initial improvement on this subject.

My machines, bought over a long period of time, have really been ignored. For younger members and modern machinery, that component could be more than I have spent in my lifetime!

Next question on machines is: How should that expense should be provided here? It’s often going to last several years or bought to turn a profit (so basically at ‘no cost’, effectively), reduce tax burden, etc.

Given their prices, and a ratchet is now aout £180-240, Id say the average spend by a full time mechanic is a few hundred.
I mean a pair of cutters is about £80 off the van now. Think I'd rather have Knipex or NWS!

I voted for £100, as i reckon that probably the 'normal average' for me over a long enough period of time..... i went on a complete tool buying ban for about a year and a half when i realised i was in with a real shot of having enough savings to clear the mortgage, but i reckon over a few years, this is about right...... ive actually spent about £250 this month (new jump pack, and a set of nice stubby torx drivers if anyone is interested!) but doubt ive spent more than £50 other than that since buying the Lathe off Matt about 5-6 months ago (that was technically in my 'not spending money' period, but im glossing over that, as it doesnt support my argument)... might buy a chassis jig thats on ebay if it sells cheap enough this week, but i doubt it will. Other than that, theres a few nice hammers in my watchlist, and a couple of other bits and bobs on my 'to buy' list, but theyre mostly 'wants' rather than needs, so will have to be either found cheap, or justified some other way.....
