How much are garages charging?

The brakes have been clunking on the mrs car. Stripped it down today to find 3 of the four rear pads had become detached from the backplate.

While fitting new disks and pads I was wondering how much I was saving.

It cost me £50 for some brembo disks and pads and took me about an hour and 30 mins with giving everything a good clean up and I don’t have the VW wind back tool so had to improvise which added a bit of time.

How much would a garage/workshop have charged for the fitting?

I don't resent paying the labour (50 to 70 an hour round here), it's the price of the parts they fit / the mark up on them.

Don't think too hard. Just enjoy the warm fuzzy feeling that you did it and there was certainly some amount of money saved. That's what I do.

I'd sack the maintenance manager . . that was a disaster narrowly avoided . . .

As a callow youth with my first car, I had exactly that and the friction material departed stage out the bottom as the disc rotated - meaning one side braked as it should . . .and the other wheel carried on pretty much as normal. I check fairly regularly these days.

I own a garage - discs and pads either axle on a VW passenger car - 1.5hrs labour at £80 an hour - parts +10% - but I might buy the parts cheaper than you. As I am buying thousands and thousands of pounds worth a month.

Honestly... My casio calculator is set @ "margin +10%".

Dealer supplied stuff I might only get 5/10% discount - so you might be better off buying it yourself - but I get most stuff delivered - but motorfactor supplied stuff - I will buy it cheaper - you would be better off getting it off me and letting me have 10%.

People turn up at my garage with a boot full of parts for me to fit and they could have bought them off me and got a warranty on them - and saved some money. The labour is the labour...

Oil in 4/5ltr cans - people pay too much for - we buying it in 208ltr drums and bulk 1000ltrs deliveries. I sell allot of oil to "shrewd" DIY mechanics - they turn up with empty cans. Buy what they need to the exact 0.5 litre. No waste for them - and I get my 10%... Engines don't take the standard 5ltrs now.

I often do a little job for a DIY mechanic - they drag hub off a car and can't press a wheel bearing out - or snap something that needs extracting...

Over here in NI, sister in law went into fast fit place to get mot check over. Among other things, front pads and discs were quoted at £325 inc fitting. This was for 2016 fiesta. I bought apec stuff from local parts place which cost £100. So labour was £225 saved!

I have been running a garage for a very long while.

I have always set my labour rates at about - 50% of what a dealer charges...

All thru the years (decades) - this what I have used to set the "labour rate"...

If I had got the maths wrong - I would have "starved to death"...

Too cheap - attacts the punters that won't/can't pay....

Too expensive - not competitive....

"Indies" - inderpendant garages are not offering the dealership model.

But there are few arogant/greedy ones - that think they are worth "top dollar" - (and they just arn't...).

The art of earning money in the motortrade - is to do allot of work - fill your day - head down - get on the treadmill - churn it out - quickly/no mistakes - then the punters - will just keep coming back...

The indie punters are not gonna buy new cars (if they did they would be at the dealers for servicing) - they are always gonna have car problems and repairs that need doing - get them back on the road - so they can get to work in the car - earn some more money - for next time... It is just circle....

It is the bottom end - end of life cars - owned by people who got no money - you have to avoid.... (barge pole tool of choice)

Front discs and pads on a 16 plate Fiesta - £110 in parts and £120 to do it - £230 tops.

I could churn them out like a conveyor all day long - and would be happy taking the money. (£325 too much - £100 quid ish 30% too much)...

I think - and always have laid quotes and estimates down as "parts and labour" in separate totals....

I got nothing to hide - it is 10% on parts and my hourly rate. Why would I go for the "cloak and dagger" approach - I got plenty of work on...

Sounds like I’ve saved a decent chunk of cash then. I usually do the smaller bits on our cars and then anything bigger or that could potentially turn into a nightmare or needs special tools I send it in to a local decent garage.

If you want me to do it - I will need paying.

I don't want to overcharge anybody (I really don't) - but I expect paying for my efforts.

And I do expect - a 10% margin for ordering in - buying in - and warranting parts I sell....

I'm afraid I fall into the category of end of life car driver lol. I maintain it myself and then if it's too expensive/ rotten to fix it gets scrapped.
