That Makita should be perfectly capable of that. Varible speed as well as geared, speed 2 for 5mm or so pilot, bang in a nicely sharpened 12 on gear 1, should be through a bit of 8mm in a couple of dozen turns
Going by a speed chart alone wont be much good, you should be looking at the chips!
If they are thin shavings, you need more pressure, sharper drill or less speed. If they are good thick chips, and you have more speed available, increase it. If the chips are too big and grabbing (using a super sharp drill by hand in alu) need more rigidity or blunt the edge a bit. Steel wont grab, sharp as possible will work much better.
