The Simms "frag" (fragmented scrap) plant on Newport dock is pretty impressive, I served my time with the port authority on the dock when the plant was being built and got to have a look around it, they feed in cars and other sizeable lumps of mixed scrap in one end and at the other end gets spat out lumps of scrap ferrous the size of your fist (frag) and then sorted piles of insulation, non ferrous, plastics etc all in their individual bays. It's pretty impressive.
Probable twice a week when I was there they would put a gas bottle or other pressurised vessel thru the plant..... The noise and blast would shake our portacabin cabin mess room that was half a mile from the scrap yard.
When they went from loading ships with mixed scrap to loading a ship with frag they got 50% more scrap in each boat due to the air gaps that the mixed scrap created.

The local collector of dead farm animals takes them to a big one of these shredders, processes a cow in 3 seconds. All of the components are separated out and used for some purpose or other, including fertiliser, biodiesel and the 'quality stuff' goes to the cosmetics industry.
Put me off wearing lippy for life, at least the expensive stuff anyway.

I took an old 3 furrow plough to clearway scrap in duncrue Belfast, it was a 3" X 4" solid frame and the guy on the grab put it on the conveyor into the shredder. When it fell in, the engine powering it let out an almighty growl and a hellish black cloud of smoke. I thought oh s**t its wrecked, not going to get me scrap money! But she just kept gobbling up more scrap. The blades must be insanely hard!
The blades in scrap shredders, are not really blades but rotating hammers, they look like a large bell that has been flattened. I think they are some form of cast iron, sims at nottingham used to make their own.They do wear out quite often.
