The problem is that yankisms are constantly infesting the King's English. Gems like "train station", "fairly unique", "electrocuted to death" and suchlike come to mind.

However Aluminum is correct, we've got it wrong with aluminium which was a later change. However can't stand ''gotten' as in 'we've gotten used to it'. But is probably grammatically correct? Just forgotten without the 'for'......I'll get my coat.......

A good pub is a great place but its not good to spend your life in it. I used to drink in one of our locals the Half Crown. I stopped going in there about 25 years ago. A bloke i knew drank in there every single night for about 30 years, He lived with his parents just down the road & worked at his Dr Dad s surgery, Get up go to work do the IT go home have dinner, go to the pub. Go home sleep get up repeat, every day he drank 12 pints of Scrumpy Jack, He died at age 48.
His entire wage packet blown in the pub every week for 30 years.

I have lots of acquaintances & people who are friends, but true lifelong friends? Probably less than ten.

I quite like it when someone recounts the same story every week. Coupled with the alcohol it's like a safe space.

Reminds me of a guy that had been working abroad for five years, thought he would nip into the pub for a pint and catch up only to find the same lot in there slumped over the bar talking the same drivel.
A friend in need is a friend indeed, you have to be careful not to surround yourself with too many of these or your life wont be your own.

Much as it sticks in the throat to admit it, "gotten" is actually an English word that fell out of use here. It went over to America with the Puritans when they flounced out and has remained in use there.

I often wonder how anyone can study english? It's such mish-mash of spellings and languages. In the Middle Ages anything goes and spellings where irrelevant. I before E..... unless it's an absorbed French/Italian/German/Greek/Latin/Indian/Chinese word?

I've actually been there and heard the same story on a Sunday as I did on the Thursday just gone. It's usually from the same raconteurs too. Often it's about past happenings in the pub and it's great to see the random hikers hooked on the stories (think the pub scene in An American Werewolf in London).

I'm thinking of making a five pointed star and hanging it somewhere prominent so we can spin a story about the local beast of the moors/valley. One of the lads did actually see it one night. As he got home from the pub it leapt over a 6' hedge right in front of him. Complete coincidence that his next door neighbour has a black labrador and the hedge might have a gap in it.

I was explaining what videonystagmography test was to a friend down the cafe the other day. However, I seem to have developed a speech impediment of late and have trouble pronunciating words clearly recently, so I think he thinks I made it up.
