How does a coolant pump like this come apart?

Just had to replace this after just two years of use. It's a Febi pump bought from Autodoc with a 2 year warranty even though Febi say they sold it to Autodoc with a 3 year warranty. Either way I had to buy a new one.

Anyone know how these come apart, I'll have a go at refurbishing if possible in case the new one also lasts 2 years.

I don't know for sure, but if I had tyo guess, I'd say a good sized press would be involved.

All the ones ive done the bearing is just an interference fit in the casting, the front pulley should pull off ok with a puller and a weeny bit of heat, the rear cast pulley can be a bit more fragile so a puller with a bit of tension and heat but take it slow! remember to get measurements of the pulley positions

Flange and shaft look all one in the pictures, suspect its a pull the impeller off and rebuild from that end. Im assuming impeller isnt screwed on. Id put puller on carefully a bit of force and heat the impeller, once at about 80-90 degrees ish should come off, but not hot enough to damage any seals.

Question is whats actually failing!

Usually the impeller is pressed on and the rest is one piece.

It's the seal that's failing, slow weep.

It's very tight, even with heat, it's going to have to go in a vice and will need a breaker bar.

heavy ish press is the way to go........
unless it's an antique it aint worth bothering with.....
if it's gone after 2 years u've been unlucky.....
my VW T4 TD gets a new pump, timing belt, idlers every 2 years....never had one leak......
prob diff to buy the parts anyway....

Im not convinced that flange comes off, on larger centrifugal pumps you often strip them from the impeller end

I couldn't get any of my pullers on the impeller end, so looks like it's a non starter, I don't want to break the puller on the flange end.

Pity as it looks like the bearings are only £15/£20 quid Vs £70 for the full pump.

Look for another brand of pump such as OE item. Our 186,000 mile / 18 year old Skoda is still on the original pump with no signs of a leak

There are lots of aftermarket brands all selling at about £70, then the OEM one from mercedes at £450. The OEM one I took off was 41 years old and had 160,000 miles on it.

I expect all the after market ones use bearings like these costing $1.

Can you use the holes in the impeller to bolt something that you can use the puller on?

Even if you end up destroying this one you could get a better idea of how the next one could be rebuilt

Thats probably what there for.

Perhaps the front pulley is blind and the shaft doesnt come through, when they leak through the weep hole it can be rust forming on the impeller where the seal sits, can happen if the cars not used for long periods and possibly the wrong strength anti freeze

You can see on this one the nice clean surface on the impeller and seal

You need to get the impeller off to reveal the main seal (it will probably seal against the impeller inner face). You will need to get the pulley flange off to reuse.

You can make a puller by bolting a disc/bar to the rear of the impeller with a centre hole and nut welded on....use a centre bolt and ball bearing to push on the bearing shaft.

As mentioned previously you need to measure depth of insertion of flange and impeller.
