I am trying to weld the thin steel that doesnt weld properly any tips?
I have lowered the amps and lowered my gas but its that kind of metal that just spits back at you even when cleaned up? help
i am using the tig with pz6500 rods the metal is a round piece of tube only about a 1mm thick it was painted but i have cleaned it. its like what they use for handrails.
Yes, but need to remove the plating. It's possible mechanically (but does tend to smear so that some remains) better chemically (dip in hydrochloric acid until the fast fizzing stops, hot rinse, cold rinse, dry off, weld away).
If it's galv and you grind it off the outside it will still be on the inside. At 1mm thick you will be burning it off the inside as well. It could do with removing off the inside, with a die grinder or as Fingers says, chemically.
On the thin steel question. I'm currently tigging a project together; 0.8mm to 1.6mm butt welds (both 304L stainless steel). I found it much easier to use 0.8mm MIG wire (308Lsi) as filler, I also sharpened up the 1.6mm tungsten to about 3.5 times its o/d. (On 20 amps, 8lpm, no 6 ceramic with gas lens & 6mm stick-out).
