How Do You Sharpen Your Drill Bits

Managed to snap a 13mm drill bit into a 183mm rsj about 3m up in the air,

Drill snagged, spun and snapped drill bit. And I then dropped the drill onto concrete floor.

I've lost high speed on the drill and had to reconnect the motor to the gearbox as jumped out, then re sharpen a now much much shorter drill bit. (Lost about 2inches of spiral) but was able to finish the job.

Now got to tell the boss my drill is faulty

That's why he only gets us cheaper bosch drills, being in the dairy/farming industry they get worked hard and abused.

I know I can be harsh at times but if the builders did the shed right I wouldn't have had to extend the rsj and fabricate mountings.

Hand drills & ladders or wobbly scaffolding are not a great combination, years ago, I did some subby work for a small engineering co. who had the job of refurbing the spray booths at JCB during the summer shutdown, I can't remember exactly why, but we were doing a lot of drilling at height - we were each given a big bag of drillbits and told to chuck any broken or blunt ones in a bucket, these were taken away at the end of the day and we were given new bags of progressively shorter drill bits each day. I've a feeling we were drilling out spot welds at the top of the spray booths so the filters could be replaced once the years of paint residue was cut through. Being summer it was way too hot for PPE and it took weeks to get rid of the grey or red primer, black or 'JCB Yellow' paint from the exposed skin and the bit of hair I had in those days.
Still, it could've been worse, I wasn't the one spending (presumably) most of the night regrinding bucketfuls of drill bits for two weeks!

Nice @Ruffian, I used to do a fair bit of dairy work, not so much these days but I still do a lot of Agricultural sheds mills and dryers (electrical installation) tools and equipment do have a hard life and usually end up taking a fair bit of abuse! Battery drills and grinders were lucky to get a year before they were toast, flooded with sht or smashed from being dropped from up high!
It's my favorite work though much nicer than wiring offices!
