+1 ...That's like the tool I bought for my Volvo...I replaced the alternator but kept the old one intending to swap out the pulley. This sort of thing, are you certain there isnt a Torx bolt at the bottom of the hole?
The VW ones require a special puller, what's it off?
I have heard of these before, I would ask on Garage JournalIt's off a North American truck, not available in the UK. It has a dense stator called a hairpin stator, that, size for size, generates about 50% more amps than Bosch or Hella. Found it on a broken Yank car in scrap yard. Thought it'll be good for my winch.
If you look at the stator, the windings are carefully stacked one on top of the next with minimal gaps, which is what I assume generates the extra current.I have heard of these before, I would ask on Garage Journal

How can I remove this alternator pulley? The part number shows it's a clutch pulley, but it’s seized and no longer "clutching". It has a 17mm female hex fitting, but there's no other place to hold it for removal.

That's a kind and appreciated offer I may take up. But to double check, when you say you have the tool, I can't find where the tool attaches. Others in the thread are suggesting I need to hold the pulley or hope and impact gun can do it.I got the special tool - drop it into my workshop and I will take it off FOC.
If you not got tool - it "angry grinder time" - "egg shell" it off shaft bit by bit.
You done the hard work mate - removing whole alternator - normally we swap - overrun pulleys in situ!

Haha so there was a small hex deep inside I hadn't noticed. The good old DeWalt ba-dum gun got it off though. It has a six sided hex on the pulley and yours looks like it got a "chewed up" torx point in the bearing shaft.
----------
Plus even with special tool - you got think about which way the threads run - to remove it.

That is bit "dumb" and hex and outer of pulley is the same thing - what you gonna move...? By doin that...!
----------
Impact gun may "snatch" it of shaft thread - it may - but not often. Normally you need 12" and 18" breaker bars to release these.
Angry grinder your best bet - no special expensive tooling required!

Now onto making a custom bracket to fit it to my buggy

Its an excellent American Forum about what people do in the garage, loads of general info, tools, Vices, I use the Old Tool Box section as they have a lot of info on Beach Boxes. What's garage journal?
The whole alternator tuning subject has been an interesting read. These small alternators can be tuned to 350 amps but they become inefficient at idle, which is no good for my winching needs.Alternators for vehicles are not generally very efficient. Likely less than 50% when hot. Cheap and cheerful. Proper mains-type generators are more like 85% plus.
