How do I get the pin out of this pulley?

This is a pulley on a self-propelled mower. The gearbox looks as if it's seized but I need to get the pulley off before I can get to the fastenings on the gearbox.

My tired old eyes don't think that's an allen-key type fixing, and I did try appropriate sized allen-keys and they just rotate.
Then I hit it with a nail and a hammer (sorry - I was tired and hungry by then) and that didn't make any difference.

I suspect all the nail was doing was splaying the edges, which was probably make it more sticky.

If its not a hex grub screw then it will be a roll pin ( the pin will go right through the pulley and shaft to the other side). You need a suitably sized drift and a bigger hammer!

If it's a roll pin, should it not have a slit going its entire length? It definitely seems sealed in the 2nd last pic, but I'm not sure about the last pic.

heat on the casting 1st Scott then make sure the drift is on the outer edge of the roll pin or you,ll just expand it when drifting out with something smaller

Ah - roger that. I've only got a wee calor-type torch - I take it that I'm in do danger of melting the casting, right?

that will do mate just to expand from its grip on the pin

Knock it out using the punch from the cleanest end, chances are when it was fitted it was burred a bit, you don't want to be driving the burr all the way through the hub and shaft,

Make sure the drift is exactly the right size for the hole...too small and it just expands the pin in the hole....too big and then you have to drift the drift back out the other way

Ask me how i know this...

If you can put something right down the middle of it...it will be some sort of pin that will come out with a bit of bashing on the right sized punch.

I'm sure it's a roll pin with a split in it which isn't ver obvious, only way to knock it out is with a parallel punch, but seeing as you've had a go with a nail try the punch on the opposite side as the nail may have flared the end

A nail would of been in the middle expanding the pin as it gets hammerd

If all you can lay your hands on is a nail at least grind the end flat.

If you can, lay the boss end of the pulley on something solid to support it, but leaving the pin room to come out. then a decent parallel punch. use a reasonably sized hammer (not too light) and good steady controlled blows, and out she comes.
