How did they paint this?

Hi guys - great forum. In the process of planning the paint job for my Series 2 Lambretta.

just wondering how they painted this one - there's a silver pinstripe between the flake and the black - nice detail. I'm not bothered about flake but a similar scheme with a metallic would be cool.

Is it silver base (just a band where you want to colours to join), intercoat/clear to seal. Tape the pinstripe you want to leave then mask one side and do the blue flake base, then intercoat/clear it, then tape the blue off and do the black base, then remove pinstripe tape and clear the lot? I assume you need to clear over each base colour to seal it and so you can mask it, but would you need to sand the clear at any of the stages or before the final clear coat over the whole lot to remove any edge?

Or have I got it completely wrong?

The blue will be candy.
So silver base, clear, mask pinstripe, candy blue over the silver flake and black round the edge.


Edit, zooming in, maybe not. The silver band doesn't look like it's flake!

That's how this kind of thing always used to be done though, maybe the painter was scared of candies?

Am I missing something , the whole piece looks the same colour? With some odd light reflections.

A good pinstriper will do that over the black/blue join then clear coat over.

if i had to copy it i would base it up silver , mask off that line then paint on the black /blue and demask it then clear it all

That's how I would do it, the silver will help that blue pop.

What about a pinstriping tool that just applies the thin band of paint - no masking required ?

I’d say the silver line is either tape, or a hand laid pinstripe. It’s definitely not a polished flat finish around that area.
